The Kindle remembers the association between your wifi SSID and a password: this is the same thing every other device that remembers wifi passwords does, too. Do you have some dubious "security" feature turned on that constantly changes your wifi SSID? I've seen some obscure wifi routers that do this and claim it's more "secure", but much like the "security" setting that prevents SSID broadcasts this is only security through obscurity, with the added downside that it stops connecting clients from remembering wifi passwords reliably.

I just bought a Voyage reader this week and saw this option for the first time: saving password to Amazon. I don't think it means anything, because my devices remember my home wi-fi. It is only at my job that I have to enter the password for their wi-fi every day.
I have a lot of trouble with this on some of my Amazon devices. For example, with my fire hdx 8.9" I choose the wi-fi network at my job and the sign-in screen does not appear. I have to forget the network and try again several times before the sign in screen comes up. |

As has already been explained, the checkbox doesn't do anything on the device it's set from. If you check the box, though, and then connect to the same WiFi network from a different Amazon device, that second device will then retrieve the WiFi password from Amazon's server, rather than you having to type it in.
