At the time it was the only large e-ink ereader and now people are getting more used to the idea of a little larger screen.

I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon came out with a 7" or 8" Kindle at some point since there seems to be a market. I doubt they'll feel pressured to do that to compete with Kobo but they might see the Aura One's success, if it is successful, as an opportunity.

Of course Amazon is full of surprises so guessing what they might do is just that; guessing.

Ok so it was really large and very expensive.
So pretty much nothing to do with this thread.

The size of paperback books. All Kindles other than the DX would fit into a pocket sized for paperback books, of which there are a great many.

... however, they have moved away from this with the Oasis, which is too wide to fit into such pockets.

Actually your comment has pretty much nothing to do with this thead. Barry answered on another post about Amazon having had a large ereader once before.

Regarding the topic, I wouldn't buy it but this is because I don't like to buy too much from Amazon.

As long as epubs are the most common form of ebooks in Europe, buying any other brand than a Kindle makes more sense anyway. I can get my ebooks from pretty much every store I want and get books from the library too. None of this would be possible with a Kindle no matter how large.

But I do think they will make one. Thus far they always were very fast to come up with a copy of other companies successes.

Here’s hoping... (also, that the Aura One will actually be a success, the H2O kinda was but that didn’t stir up Amazon)
Maybe they can get Liquavista ready for the next summer season and one up Kobo...

Yeah, well, IIRC they made a lighted kindle after there was a lighted Kobo and the Voyage after the Aura.

Liquavista sounds interesting. But this might be where one has to sell the house. mortage won't cut it then, if they pricetag it in Oasis style.

Alas, hope dies last.

Amazon is like Sony. They both tried something that didn;t work and have given up on it. Sony tried front lighting with the PRS-700 and it was a failure. So no more front light. Amazon tried a larger screen Kindle wit the Kindle DX and that failed so no more larger than 6" screen Kindles.

It seems only one failure is enough to stop trying new things.

We don't know how much one failure costs, so it might be clever not to risk a second one.

it's really interesting the amazon's fire tablets, even the largest sized models, are priced less than the oasis. i'm wondering what the amazon's actual costs are for each of these devices.

It's not really too surprising, though. The Fire tablets are rather low-spec Android devices probably sold at (or close to) cost. The Voyage and Oasis are premium devices sold at a hefty profit.

Amazon and Sony and pretty much everyone else has had lots of failures and they still try new things. Since they failed with the DX they've tried and failed with the Fire Phone and a variety of other things and they're still trying new things. Amazon sure hasn't slowed down. I don't know as much about Sony but my guess is they haven't either.

Companies are in business to make money and they try things and if they work they keep going with them. If they fail they either learn the lesson that offers or, now and then, try again.

No new Fire Phones, and as a Fire Phone owner I think that's as it should be, but now Amazon has phones with special offers with heavily discounted prices. So this is a case where they learned their lesson and also tried something else. Maybe they'll do something like that with the DX.

I have no interest in a larger reader but I just today got a chance to help set up someone's Kobo Aura HD which is my first exposure to larger ereaders. I don't want one that large but I can see the attraction. It's a nice device.

Yes, I would buy in an instant

I would buy one in an instant. I received my new Kobo Aura One yesterday and so far I am not impressed. (I'm just off to look for your post about why you are returning your Aura One.)

Yesterday, I left it connected to my computer via Calibre and went and made a coffee. When I returned everything looked good and I put the grand total of 9 books on to it. Yet today, when I reconnected via Calibre it took 7+ minutes to "scan" books on the device. When I checked with a "USB Safely Remove" app it said the Kobo was being scanned by AVG anti-virus. I added the Kobo to the AVG exemption list, rebooted and tried again: SAME RESULT!

I then uninstalled AVG anti-virus and had another go. Same result: 7+ minutes to fully connect via Calibre whilst it "scanned" the books on the device.

After searching all over the Internet, I saw a comment [about Kobo HD Glo] that using the actual Kobo cable supplied with the reader improved things.

It worked! I cannot believe it! I always have a Kindle cable plugged into a spare USB3 socket and I use this for connecting a Kindle Voyage / Paperwhite / Kindle DX 10" and 2 different smartphones plus Lenovo/LG/Kindle Fire Tablets without any problems.

I find it hard to believe that you must use a Kobo cable to connect to a Windows 7 desktop, but it seems to have cured the problem.

It has not cured any other problems with the Kobo Aura One: very slow page turns when compared to the Voyage or Paperwhite; still a lot of wasted real estate on many screens; some strange lighting effects when lying in bed, reading in a "candlelit" room - red bleeding at the bottom of some pages.

All in all, for the money I paid (plus a Kobo sleep cover!) I am not happy with my purchase and suspect it will shortly be passed on to another family member just like my previous Kobos.

IMHO, Kindle is truly the benchmark for ereaders - *BUT*, it's time they listened to customers and increased the screen size. If a bigger screen Kindle comes out this Autumn/Winter, I will be first in the queue.

I haven't been able to see a Kobo Aura One first hand, so maybe it'd change my mind.

But right now, I'd rather see Amazon invest in a better OS for the Kindles. I like to carry a lot of books, and I like them organized. My Voyage has a very nice screen, but loading and sorting books is a big PITA.

I'd like the power of a tablet with an eInk screen.

Hi, I'm wondering if maybe I can get some tips here from you.

How do you go about organising your books on a Kindle. I tried to set up a few folders like "Reading Now" / "Historical Fiction" / "Biographies" etc ... but then I found when I was looking at my initial library page, I could not remember what was in those folders so then I wiped them and went back to just a clutter of books covering some 25 pages in my Kindle Voyage index but I do enjoy browsing through them when looking for something to read.

Maybe I enjoy this because that is the way I have stored physical books over a very long life - no real system, just piles and piles of books! (And I look around and think, "Good Lord! When I go, some people are going to get a shock!"

One thing I am scrupulous about - once I've read it, I delete it from my Kindle.

As I say, what do you find is the best way to organise your books on a Kindle, please?
