Catherine, I believe you need wifi on so that your sign out goes through kobo.com. Then sign back in likewise with your kobo.com ID and password thereby allowing any remaining syncing to finish. This is the way I did it and (crossing my fingers) all seems fine now.
And, yes, the idea that Kobo expects that "common folk" need to somehow know how to do all of this so as to get their Kobo device to be serviceable is fairly mind boggling. |

Very mind boggling. But thank god for smart people here! Ok so I logged out with my WIFI on. Logged back in and it synced. Re did the patch. Should I have done the patch before logging back in? And does it matter that I log in to my Kobo account on the reader via my Facebook account and not directly using my kobo account? How can I tell if it's stuck in perpetual sync mode other than battery drain? |

Firstly, no-one has actually stated it, but the auto sync option not staying off is a bug in the firmware. Kobo know about it and it should be fixed in the next update. I don't know when that will be, but my guess is sometime in October. Adding "PeriodicAutoSync=false" to the config file is a workaround. That is what the broken option would add if it was working. As long as you don't go to the sync page of the settings and change something, it will stay in the config file and prevent the auto sync from happening. This does not stop other syncs from happening. If you press the sync tile, it will sync. If you open a purchased kepub, it will sync the status for that book. When you close the book, it will sync the status again. Sometimes the sync doesn't complete. It will continue running and using the battery. This has absolutely nothing to do with the auto-sync. The only issue with that is if the auto-sync doesn't complete, it will use battery until you see it and stop it manually. I don't know why the sync fails to complete. Except maybe some network issues, and these I'm not sure on. I do know that on my previous problematic DSL service, it would fail to complete frequently. On my current connection, it fails a lot less often. One of the things I do when the sync isn't happening is to open the browser. I do this to check the network is up. If I can't connect, then there are network problems. If I can, then I know it is either the sync or the Kobo server. Sometimes this does seem to wake the link and the sync finishes shortly afterwards. Any sync should stop when you tap the sync tile or the option in the menu. But, sometimes that doesn't happen. Or the tile shows it has stopped, but the menu doesn't. If this happens, then none of the syncs will work from then on. It probably means a background task has become stuck and will probably keep running using CPU and hence battery. Restarting the device will fix this. There is no need to log out of the device. With all this, Kobo doesn't expect anyone to do this. They want the devices to just work for everyone. But, unfortunately, there are bugs, as there are bugs in all software. This bug just happens to be a visible one that people here have latched onto as the cause of problems they are seeing. Adding the option to the config file is something I suggested when the bug with the option was raised. I suggested it as a way to work out if the auto-sync was the culprit for the battery drain being seen. |

Actually, redoing the firmware patches isn't neccessary. Signing out of your account and signing back in will rebuild the database, but not do a full factory reset (which would wipe out the firmware patches)

Gotta love how Kobo can’t do software (otherwise you’d be banging your head against the wall constantly)...

Sorry, but what problems is CatherineStewart facing that needs a sign out from Kobo account? Stopping the auto-sync doesn't need that.

Yeah, you're right. I just reacted to the combination 'Sign out & in to your account' & 'redo firmware mods', but she doesn't need to relogin to her account to begin with.

When I sign out and sign back in, it DOES remove the patch, every time.

The config file is regenerated from scratch when you sign out and back in and you will lose any manual changes to the config file. But, changing a config file option is not a "patch". And as I said, nothing you have reported in this thread, or any other I have seen, needed you to sign out of the device to fix it.

Catherine, I basically repeated for you the sequence that other(s) recommended that I do...and which worked for me. Nothing was original to me so I can't take personal credit.
Fortunately for me, someone directed me to sign out and sign back in with wifi on (which then did require that I redo the firmware mod and initialization process but left the library intact) and my following this person's direction either (i) did solve my battery drain problem or (ii) was an amazing coincidence. |

David, if you're right about (ii), then the "amazing coincidence" occurred for other(s) as well.
Without doing the sign out/sign in sequence, I don't see how the endless syncing attempt could complete...but what do I know!?! |

Well, I can think of a few reasons. But, can you point to where the advice was posted? I must have missed that but I'd love to know what the logic behind the suggestion was.
