Even if Amazon doesn't delete your books, you might get tangled with them with regard to some sort of issue (a payment you said you made, but they say you didn't, or something), and they might decide to ban your account and access or whatever.

It's just smart to download and un-DRM the books so you'll never have to depend on the retailer again.

Copy the mobi from the book folder to the desktop (just in case). Run MobiEditor and browse to the mobi on the desktop, if it shows a Contributor with something like "calibre (1.37) [http://calibre-ebook.com]" you have the answer.

BTW that site was the second item in Google Search for "change mobi metadata"

It would be easier to load the ePub into Calibre's eBook editor and look in the OPF. But mind that some eBooks (ePub & Mobi) were made with Calibre and the presence of a Calibre string does not mean that it's not the original. So looking for the Calibre string is not 100% fool proof.

Looking at the ePUB's opf will not attest as to the provenance of the MOBI.

And nothing is 100% fool proof, even against those such as yourself

Well in the pottermore example, viewing the purchase history on the account should be 100%

You would think, but no. Looking at my purchase history merely shows me the list of books I've bought with links to download them again in any format I want, but no information on which formats I already downloaded.

However, I'm wondering if they still have a limit on downloads - it used to be you could only download each book a total of 8 times before having to re-purchase. I had 5 downloads left, which is why I wanted to figure this out so I could avoid using up another download if possible.

Even if they've removed the limit, I still want to know how to figure out which file was the original and which was the result of me converting from one file to another, since I've bought books from Amazon, Kobo, and Barnes and Noble in the past.

If Mobi was the original format, would you have converted from Mobi to ePub using Calibre? if so, look at the ePub OPF and if Calibre is no mentioned, then it is the source. That doesn't mean all the ones that do mention Calibre might not be the source, but you can be fairly sure that if Calibre is not mentioned, then that ePub would be the source.

What I do is I have a library for my original eBooks. I do not modify them there. When I want to read something in that library, I copy over to my working library. This way, I always know what the original is and the date added to Calibre.

Half my purchased EPUB were created with Calibre in the work flow.
The ones I see without tend to be from some BPH.

So even if there were Calibre footprints. Read the timestamps . Those may give a clue if they appear to be from Before the purchase/import

You didn't fully read my post. I did say checking for the lack of Calibre in the OPF is not fully going to work. But it will work in some cases which will help for those eBook where ePub is the source and Calibre was not used.
