The factory reset would be the way to fix it if anything will. You say it doesn't get past the three boxes. But, did it display a screen saying it was resetting? And exactly how are you doing the factory reset?
Maybe I'm using the wrong word. I'm sticking a pin into the back of the kobo where the reset hole is.

That's not a factory reset. That's basically just turning it off and on again. Same as the reset button on a PC, it forces a warm reboot without saving anything first.

I'm not sure how to do a factory reset of the original Kobo. From memory, with the WiFi, you hold the centre button down while turning it on. My guess is the original is the same.

In general the steps are:

- Charge the device for at least an hour.
- Hold the power switch in the off position for about 20 seconds.
- Hold the second button down while turning it on.
- Release the second button when the LED flashing changes or the screen changes.

"The second button" changes on each of the devices. For the devices with a light button, that is used, the Touch uses the home button, and the WiFi uses the centre button. For the one button devices, this step is replaced by holding the power button down and tapping the bottom corners.

If the above works, it should display screens about resetting the device and then you will need to do the setup again.

Just tried it. The LED light flashes the screen goes blank for a few seconds starts to load and stops again at three squares.

well I've gotten the kobo to the point were I can get it load all seven squares, but then stops there.

Thanks everybody for your help and suggestions. I've tried them all and none have worked. It seems like the kobo is kaput and beyond a simple fix. I am open to more ideas. I don't want to give up, even though I don't need this kobo I would like to figure out what the problem is.

I am not sure what you are still looking for, but like what everyone says here, you should start looking for a new eReader. The Kobo Glo HD would definitely suit your needs and might last you 5-6 years depending on your charging cycles.
