Is there anyplace where all the mobile read stuff is indexed? Trying to go through a forum looking for something is less than fun.
In the top nav bar of the site is a link for "E-Books"
Click on the format you're looking for, then you can choose genre, and if you click on the first letter of the author's last name it will will break it down further.

The collection management on from calibre on the Kobo is more flexible than that. In the driver configuration, you specify one or more columns. The values from all of these columns are used for collections. Each book will appear in all these collections. As an example, I currently have (though I forget the exact names):

Code:
#kobobookshelves, series, #status
"series" is the series in calibre, so there is a collection for each series.
"#status" is a custom tag-like column I use mainly to store the reading status. Each book will have one of "toRead", "Reading" and "Finished". There are a couple of other values I use for other things.
"#kobobookshelves: is another custom tag-like column. This is manually maintained and is effectively a random list of collection names I want on the device. Not all books have a value, and some have multiples.

What about series order? Do any readers properly support series metadata?
As far as I can tell, the Kobo devices are the closest to full series metadata support. It displays the series name and number, but, it doesn't read this from the books (there is no standard for this in epub2). For books bought from Kobo, it is set by the download process. For sideloaded books, it can be set from calibre.

You can search for books by series name. But, there isn't a method to sort by it. That's my second top feature request. Number one is a series list.

I also never decice what book to read till I've finished my current book. But while reading the current book I'm look things over and picking likely candidates and putting them on my Kindle. I usually have 20 or 30 books on my Kindle but those change day to day. Maybe 1/3 of them are books I'm sure I'll read in the next few months and the other 2/3 are maybes and they keep right on changing.

Yes I do plan but I never, or almost never, decide till it's time to read something. The few exceptions are when there's a new book by a favorite author. Since a lot of my favorite authors are no longer living that doesn't happen a lot. The few dead writers who keep on writing, such as Robert Ludlum, don't interest me.

I rarely read series as such. I'll read books that are part of a series but never if they're too inter-related.

I do re-read a lot of books but never within a couple of years. Usually 4 or 5 years later.

Anyway 20 to 30 works for me.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is that Kindle books are not compatible with the Kobo readers.

FWIW, Kobo's can read Mobi files, just not as well as they do ePub's (or kePub's).

Thanks!
If you are in the USA, I suggest ordering from Chapters Indigo instead.

Thank you! That is a lot nicer than trying to browse the forum directly

Thank you to everyone posting details about kobo readers, it looks like I'll get a Aura H2O (for the larger screen and improved dust/water resistance).

I am guessing you didn't see the links to both the kindle and the epub indexes. I linked both of them to save you a search.
Enjoy.
Oh and do know those are all public domain books.
You won't find anything recent.
