It also has to have a different exth 113 (ASIN) record, or else the Content Catalog will get in a snit. e.g. by collections (you can end up with "ghost" books). Fortunately, calibre conversions will generate an exth 113 field from a UUID, unless you manually set it with Quality Check or something. Unfortunately, if you send multiple copies of the same book with multiple tweaked titles (so they end up having different filenames and the second one doesn't overwrite the first), they will have the same exth 113 header and that is the primary cause of this issue. |

so the simple answer please, I am not following all of that generate exth 133 stuff ?
assuming a conversion is done with calibre's defaults - & that title etc is not changed. can the original and the converted books co-exist on kindle or is there some "113" issue clash ? yes/no/maybe ? |

calibre conversions are always unique. You have to deliberately modify the metadata headers to create a clash. That, or change the title in calibre and update the metadata of an existing book, then send both copies to your Kindle... which implies keeping two ebooks that are absolutely identical other than the title. But there is no reason to do that if the contents are the same, right? ![]() So that doesn't tend to happen either. ... Apologies if I have caused unnecessary confusion. ![]() |

That said, I've just started using Calibre myself. My main reason was to de-DRM the books. I've been reading ebooks since the start of dawn, for me that was in the early 90's back in the Palm Pilot and Palm DB days. Then went onto Peanut Press and eReader.com where I purchased about 500 ebooks, sadly B&N bought them out and closed them down, I never could get the conversion to convert my books over to B&N so lost them all. Lately I've actually been re-purchasing the better author books and re-reading them again on my Kindles but it got me thinking. I doubt Amazon will ever drop off the face of the earth but different formats can overcome others, it wouldn't surprise me if Google or Apple with iBooks became the de facto standard in decades to come. I'd hate to lose all of my Kindle purchased ebooks, so I started to de-DRM them with Calibre. My main question to you is, are you sending them to your Kindle via the Send to Kindle service, and if so are they working okay, like no problems with your account? Or are you just side loading them? I've been side loading them up until now as I wasn't sure but would prefer to have them appear in my Amazon Cloud so I can access them on several of my Kindle devices easily without having to side load to each device. |
