That seems to be an edge case, and I would expect it is resolvable by engaging customer support, in absence of evidence to the contrary. And if it become more than an edge case, Amazon would surely find it in their interest to engage a technical solution to avoid having the issue surface in the future.

I have been thinking that the Kindle in Motion format was dead since it was never officially announced by Amazon and the number of titles available hadn't changed in months. Today I see that one more title has been added to the Kindle in Motion list, bringing the total number of books in that format to eight.

Ripper: The Secret Life of Walter Sickert by Patricia Cornwell to be released Jan 15, 2017.

(Now due Feb 28, 2017.)

Despite still not being officially announced (as far as I can tell) Amazon continues to add titles with Kindle in Motion. They are currently up to 12 available and 4 coming soon.

The latest is Wool Omnibus Edition by Hugh Howey.

Is there a way to get these books without the in-motion features? I know I can download them for my kindle e-ink and they should be excluded, but can I buy an edition without the features or somehow specify that I don't want them when downloading to my phone/tablet?

You can for Wool. I cannot say about the others as I don't know the titles.

I had previously purchased Wool and now the same ASIN points to the Kindle in Motion version. It showed up for me as an "Update available" in "Manage Your Content & Devices" on the Amazon website. I assume that if I had automatic updates enabled then it would have just updated to Kindle in Motion automatically. I don't see any way to get the original version of the book.

On my Android device it downloads with the "in motion" features enabled, but it gives you the option to turn off "Show media" in the "Aa" menu. This makes it display like a regular book. However, it doesn't reduce the storage consumed.

This book eats up a lot of space:
  • It occupies 856MB of storage on my Android device as a set of KFX files.
  • Using "Download & transfer via USB" targeted to my Kindle delivered a 41MB .azw3 (KF8 format) file.
  • Downloading the book using Kindle for PC 1.19 delivered both a 41MB .azw file (KF8 format) and a 497 MB .azw.res file.
  • Sending it directly to my Kindle resulted in a 2MB .azw3 file along with a 25MB .azw6 file.

For comparison Wool used to be delivered as a 711KB file in MOBI format.

I have to say that Kindle in Motion sucks. I bought Wool at Kobo and because Howey has gone over to the dark side, Wool is no longer available to purchase in the US as a real eBook.

But keeping the same ASIN meant a free upgrade

Maybe he should have also issued a second edition, BAEN style.

How is an 800K eBook an upgrade? To me, I find that to be a downgrade. Also, because this POS has replaced the real eBook and Hugh Howey is in bed with Amazon, there is NO way you can purchase a plain old eBook version in the US. That's a serious screw-up.

Quote:

Yes, bringing out another version would have been the best way to handle this. Replacing a an eBook is this abomination is a really bad idea.

I can't really figure why anyone would want it. I don't want moving pictures in my books. I just want to read. Really, for what I read I'd just as soon have Mobi format. It gives me everything I need in a book. What's with this constant changing of formats anyway?

$0.15 (Fifteen cents) per megabyte, not $0.10, unless that's changed in the last 48 hours.

But I think the reason for this is mainly to show 'we can do it too': iBooks format has had this stuff for awhile (e.g. the Harry Potter books), and those are also pretty big.
Yes, but nobody pretends that an iPad or even an iPhone is a dedicated eReading device. They are, by teir nature, design, marketing, etc., platforms created for folks to consume content. Music, movies, games and other high-bandwidth consumption.

I'd like to see support for animated SVG, as those could be considerably smaller than video or animated GIF. SVG 2 spec just released, as SVG on the web is seeing a renaissance with the demise of Flash.

Oh, lord. Can't wait. I fully expect to have requests for this by the end of the bloody week.
