calibre will do no such thing. It is the thirdparty Quality Check plugin which can embed an ASIN in selected books, first attempting to use the mobi-asin/asin/amazon identifiers in the calibre metadata.

So I dreamed the fact that it might be picking up the ASIN if set with the proper metadata identifier instead of generating an uuid?

Shame :/.

I believe that is by design -- core calibre regards it as a new book and doesn't want to clash with the book in Amazon's systems -- conversions will always generate a book with incompatible location offsets.
