Why? You paid for a book and Kobo gave it to you. Why do you deserve a free upgrade to the next edition? You would never consider that for a paper book.

Then there are people who don't want the update. The easer example of why you might no is a movie: "Star Wars" as I saw it at the drive-in (it was called "Star Wars" not "Star Wars IV: A "Star Wars"New Hope"), or as George Lucas has reimaged it. There are examples of exactly this in the book world. The update will probably invalidate all the annotations that someone has made, so forcing it on someone

And for a lot of people it's simple: They have read the book, they don't need it to be updated as they won't read it again.

And of course, maybe Kobo hasn't received the update. Whether they do probably depends on the publisher as much as Kobo. The contract between the publisher and Kobo has to include updates and then the publisher has to actually send Kobo the update version.

Personally, if the update is fixing formatting so that I can read it properly, good. If it's fixing spelling or grammar, good, but I'm not sure if I would have read it in the first place. Other changes, I don't know. I'd have to know what they were.
All good points. Like I said, not a big deal but the competition seems to do it already.

That doesn't mean Kobo got the updated version.
Silly question: was this a paid or free book?
Big publisher or small publisher?

The example was "The Cold Dish" by Craig Johnson. Penguin, so I would say major publisher.

Kobo definitely DOES NOT update your eBooks. I have the book One Shot by Lee Child and the Kobo downloaded version is 3.0 and the current version is 3.0_r12.

Is there a way to get Kobo to update all of my eBooks?

Kobo DOES update books. There are a lot of reasons for ONE book not to be updated. You should talk to the publisher to make sure they have given Kobo the updated book and then Kobo to make find out what they are doing with it.

Actually, I just checked the preview on Kobo's site, and they definitely do have the updated version for sale. I'm not sure why it's not available for previous purchasers to download. I understand that some people may not want their books to be updated, and that's fine--those people don't have to update their books. People that do want the latest version should have the option to, however.

When I buy an eBook, I get the current version. But if I then don't read it for a while, there's no reason I should not be able to go back to Kobo and download the current latest version.

What is the best way to contact Kobo about this issue?

I've been through this recently with a malformed book I bought (coding problems of this non-fiction book stopped illustrations from displaying), and my understanding from discussions with Kobo CS is that Kobo will update the version of the book in its bookstore, but
a) it has no process to be pro-active (so it's up to the publisher to provide the updated file) and
b) there's no procedure to push the updated file to those who've bought the previous version.

But if you delete the file from your library, and re-download it, you should (I'm assured!) get the new version, since the old one will no longer be cached.

However, you may have to take all this through Customer Service anyway, because it seems the version details aren't regularly noted in the bookstore listings ... so unless there are visible changes like a new cover, you're not going to know whether there's a new version or not.

I've made several enhancement requests for the way the bookstore operates -- one is about updated versions, and the other is for the bookstore to remember a customer's purchases, so it doesn't keep recommending books you've already bought (!!!) -- but I'm not at all sure whether requests like that even go into any kind of active consideration.

What is the phone number for Kobo CS I'd like to hear what they have to say about this issue? A lot of eBooks do get updated and by not letting us download whatever the latest version for sale, we lose out on formatting changes and corrected errors. Take The Lord of the Rings books. When they first came out there had a number of errors that have been fixed in a few different releases. So if you bought the books when they first came out, you've been screwed because all you can download is the old version.

I agree. Plus, if they do NOT update to newer versions at all, then I could purchase a book today with old errors or missing new content that is available elsewhere.

It's not that you'd be purchasing an eBook that's an old version. It's that the version you do buy is the one you get even if the publisher has updated it. So what you buy at the time is what you get.
