Sounds a lot like Old Time Radio. The stories are told via what the characters say, narrators and the sound effects. To tell the truth I think they are better than TV. OTR helps you to stretch your imagination more. For that matter as far as audio books there was a time when all storytelling was audio only. Back before many could read and books were hand copied there were people who wandered from town to town telling stories in exchange for the hospitality of the community. it's also how news got around in those days. People would memorize small songs that contained the message of the news. We still have some fragments of wisdom passed down through rhymes too. i.e. 30 days hath september ...

My wife thinks I am weird because I never have a problem falling asleep. I just close my eyes and I am asleep within two or three minutes. Also, I do not gradually wake up. I go from being asleep to wide awake and standing up instantly. It is like someone flipped a light switch.

I am the same way. For me I workout for about 90 minutes in the evenings, then it is about an hour and half before I go to bed, time to relax and shower. I have no problem falling asleep and I sleep all night most of the time.

You must have been young. There were other reasons for increasing background noise

I figure I'll need audio books once I wear my eyes out reading e-books.

I work about the same, including commute. Fortunately, I commute by bus, so I read on the bus. I also read while I brush my teeth, eat (if I'm not eating with friends/family), do my hair, work out, and basically any moments I can. I read at least 2-3 books a week. I've never understood people who don't ever have time to read, although I do have days when the only time I have to read is while brushing my teeth

2-3 books per week is quite a lot. That's about 100 books a year. I hope you find more time to read in the future.

The problem voiced is rather "I don't have as much time for reading as I'd like to." That's nothing ebook specific about that.

Newer e-reader models should have helped.
You now have Water Resistant models, so you could read In the Bath, without fear of book dunking

I've never had that fear since I started e-reading--I read in the pool all day today with my Kindle in a ziploc bag.

I couldn't do that with a paper book, but I have been able to with all of my e-readers. (except for my Aura HD...the IR touchscreen doesn't seem to work as well through the bag as the capacitive does.)

I've also gone the audiobook route and its changed my life. I read while driving, walking the dog, doing household chores. It's also gotten me over my first person pet peeve.

To the OP, the narration these days is usually performed by trained actors or professional narrators. It is no longer the mechanical/robotic voice (unless you are using the text to voice option on the ereader).

I think it's great that you categorize listening to audiobooks as reading instead of "reading" or some such term. I wish more people would acknowledge this simple fact.

I must respectfully disagree. It's "listening", not "reading". That's not to say that listening is in any way inferior to reading; it's simply a different activity involving different senses. The narrator is reading the book; I am listening to the narrator reading the book.
