I'm a techie myself so I know something had to break inside the device in order to produce the "shattered window" effect. However, I have NEVER encountered this kind of effect on any of my Nooks or my brother-in-law's Kindles (nor have I leaned on the device). Could it have been subject to twisting or bending forces? Theoretically possible when it was loose in my laptop case or carried in the cargo pocket of my pants/shorts but rather unlikely given how firm the Kobo's case itself is and the fact it was always enclosed in a sleep cover. Nooks -- especially the Glowlight -- have MUCH less substantial shells and I've never seen them develop this kind of screen effect.

I don't believe in magic either but the rather spontaneous appearance (it happened, it wasn't a hypothesis) of the shattered window effect implies to me a design or construction flaw. From the number of similar complaints I've seen, it's not a common problem but it's not rare either -- which again argues for a flaw in the part or construction. Kobo's response was rather typical of a company in denial.

It's a known weakpoint of the eInk screens in general. They're incredibly fragile, that's just how it is. You can break them with a single finger (if you press a bit too hard), it doesn't take all that much force. A single bump might set it off and by the time you notice you no longer remember the bump anymore (if you noticed in the first place).

Most cases do not protect against torsion/bending at all. At best they will distribute pressure and dampen some shocks... you'd need it to be solid all around, like a wooden/metal box, a bit of cardboard does not help much.

So since the device is broken anyway, grab the bottom left and top right corners and put your fingers in the middle and try to flex it. I betting that even though you think the case is "firm" that it will bend. It's not necessarily a point pressure that causes issues, but bending can stress the screen and with a bigger screen it's easier to bend it. As for the spontaneous nature of it: I've had car windshields that have gone for a year with tiny barely noticable crack that has suddenly gone across the whole thing "spontaneously" overnight.

Well, don't break the mainboard and everything else... not if you're trying your luck with one of those replacement displays anyway.

Kobo should start using plastic substrate instead of glass.

best wishes koboy

Eink Nooks and Kindles are also prone to substrate breakage. Carrying in a pocket or loose in a bag will increase your risk of damaging it, and has been said to you multiple times, the damage may not be visible immediately.
