They can't sell all their ebooks, but they can sell so few that maintaining the marketing infrastructure isn't profitable. At that point, what happens to the licensed right to sell copies of their master file is probably an asset that either gets sold to the highest bidder, or returns back to the publisher.

Maybe they lose their license to sell the ebooks when their volume drops below a certain level and it returns to the publisher.

It all sounds sad and ugly to me!

Most generic ePub bookstores rely on a white label partner (Bluefire, Overdrive, etc) to actually run the bookstore in return for a cut of the revenue.

In a liquidation proceeding the contract may be a liability instead of an asset depending on the termination clauses. Somebody *might* buy the user accounts or the bookstore name and domain name or the customers might just get hung out to dry if the customer base isn't big enough to draw a bidder.

I have been checking the location here for a decent sale on inventory, but so far their sale prices are still way higher for boardgames than I would pay through Miniature Market or Cool Stuff Inc.
WHen they liquidate (as is happening here) a liquidator takes over and raises the prices to non-sale prices and then marks them down. You'll have to wait until near closing for the prices to really go down. I just went through this with Hancock Fabrics--same deal. The liquidators took everything to full and inflated price and started with 10 percent discounts. They had several months to let people shop. It wasn't until the last month that I saw 70 and 80 percent off. By that time a lot of things were picked over, but I was lucky that my store was a consolidation spot for three other stores. That meant finding some real bargains.

Keep watching and stop in ever so often. There was one day each week when new prices would come out, but that didn't happen until the first month was over (they apparently wanted panicked buyers to grab material they needed for unfinished projects). Then, every Thurs a group of thing would go lower. Finally, everything was 50 percent or greater, but it was maddening waiting to see if something I wanted would finally go lower than 50 percent (because before the liquidation I had 50 percent of coupons that I always used so no way was I buying until it was GREATER than 50 percent!)

Good luck. There will be bargains, but it's not likely in the first few weeks!

I don't know if the consolidator for Hastings has raised prices. But many of the percent-off deals that I've seen at Hastings so far, since the closure announcement, are no better than a person could have caught at times when they were having ordinary promotions at times.

Has anyone seen any discounts on online merchandise. I mean like used (physical) books?

Sorry, that is what I meant by "raised prices." Everything went to full price, which for Hancock meant the prices went up! They always had a category or three on sale and there were weekly coupons. When the liquidators took over, no coupons were accepted and there were no sale categories other than 10 percent off (which is nothing when you are used to 50 percent off any one fabric ANY week of the year and 40 percent off any notion. Notions are things like thread and zippers.)

I was able to follow which things were getting discounted by watching the website--each week some new category would be added or an old one discounted further. But I know of only one Hastings here near Austin and it's too far for me to bother with so I don't know if they are posting their demise as it happens.
