Or maybe I would have luck, if only I hadn't typoed something?

I am not really sure what my trial code actually looked like. But it seems to work now, so I probably messed something unrelated up.

Attached is an update_*.bin for all devices.
It should work on any device the hotfix works on. Except with less guaranteed updates.

...

NiLuJe. The comments in the KindleTool source claim that --ota targets fw 5.5.0-5.8.1.0.1
But it runs fine on my 5.3.7.3 KT as well -- do old devices not check the target revisions at all, or does the source lie?

WARNING: No guarantees are made that KindleMenu still works on newer firmware to begin with.
In fact, the claim was made that it doesn't, entirely: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...42#post3284942
Also, I don't believe it is gandalf-compliant, so it may not run menu items with sufficient permissions.

So that may need to be fixed pronto. Especially if you want the actual shortcut to actually be operable without starting it each time via KUAL.
And I am not sure how -- I don't own the affected devices, and anyway I know less than NiLuJe.

@eschwartz: Err, that's unexpected (and confirmed to behave properly on a PW2, IIRC).

The OTA daemon is known to be weirdly buggy on some FW, so, who knows...

EDIT: Or it might be something entirely stupid: what's the full OTA build number of that FW?

EDIT²: Yes, yes it is. FW 5.3.7.3 has a higher build number than FW 5.5.0.... -_-".

Huh. Astounding logic, that. Gives real meaning to the concept of "versions". Well, then. Thanks for clearing up my confusion.

...

I only asked because initially I was going to create two update bins, for older devices. Wouldn't it make sense to target the minimum OTA at the lowest thing the OTA daemon will accept -- hopefully something that covers all "kindle5" devices?

Therein lies the rub .

No idea if there isn't a sneaky source check like there might be for the target one .

Hence the "start somewhere around when things got weird" to "stop at latest FW +1" .

@eschwartz: I installed your .bin, got update successful message, however I don't think Kindle Menu works on KOA 5.7.4. I see a new entry named "Images" with a .jpg image in it. I don't see any other kind of entry that would launch Kindle Menu. When I plug in the Kindle and look at the directory I see all the new Kindle Menu extensions listed in the extension directory. So I'm assuming Kindle Menu still cannot be launched without KUAL? (Maybe this is not what you were trying to figure out to begin with anyway. )

How would I uninstall? Just delete the kindle menu related folders from the extensions folder and also delete that images folder?

You assume correctly, that that is not what I was trying to figure out.

KindleMenu is still incompatible with the newer firmwares, in the sense that the kindlemenu/bin/shortcut.sh script does not successfully tell pillow to register swipes on the statusbar...
Manually launching kindlemenu/bin/kindlemenu.sh should still cause KindleMenu to appear even without swiping. But that is not nearly as helpful.

...

All I did was register an upstart job to activate the shortcut.

If you can fix the extension, then restart the framework to trigger the upstart job (one-time reboot is easiest) then KindleMenu will officially work on the KOA.

But that will take someone who owns one of the fw5.6.5 devices in question to inspect how pillow interacts on the new firmware.

Since it is just the shortcut that was reported inoperable, the problem probably lies in the lipc call to com.lab126.pillow interrogatePillow

@eschwartz:

Wellll.... all what you are talking about is way above my technical knowledge; I wouldn't know how to do any of this. I'm happy to test anything if I can and report my findings. I am amazed at what all of you do here, and I am very, very grateful.

I learned from @knc1's post here in the main JB thread that some packages can be installed using the ;log mrpi searchbar command.

With assistance from @NiLuJe and @chrox, I was able to install KPVBooklet using the ;log mrpi searchbar command on my KOA (I now have the KOA back up to firmware 5.8.1 also). I am now able to use KPVBooklet to open epubs and PDFs in KOReader.

There are few issues with KOReader on the KOA (physical page buttons don't work), but that is for another thread. I'm just so happy to be using KOReader on my KOA that tapping the screen to turn pages is fine.

KOReader is awesome! I have it on my KOA, KV and Kobo H20.

Just load up enough books to keep you busy for awhile.

There is a re-write of KUAL (Kindle Universal Application Launcher (pronouced: COOL)) in the works.

You should be able to grab the Booklet version of KUAL from the snapshots thread any hour now.

It works and has been packaged in an installer. But it doesn't appear that NiLuJe updated the snapshots with the latest yet, so expect that to be incoming...

Hi everyone,

I am new here. I have a jb KOA wifi on 5.8.5 with KUAL and KOReader successfully installed.

But I cannot open my epub files using KOReader.

What should I do?

Much appreciated your advise/instructions!

>> UPDATED:

After a fresh install, KOReader works flawlessly.

Also, I was able to install Kindle Menu, but just some items work fine.
