Most definitely! Apple has complete control over its platform and Google doesn't.

Yes, and users all get the same choice of "I want the new version" or "not now" (and most people want it) at about the same time on about all devices, versus Android's added factors of phone manufacturer, model, cell provider plus user choice. If those two diverse ways of doing things DIDN'T result in a huge difference in fragmentation, then THAT would be noteworthy!

I'm sure the majority do. However I have multiple devices stuck at 4.x.x and can't run multiple apps I want to run at all. It's frustrating since one of my oldest devices, original Nexus 7, despite being incredibly slow runs the most up to date OS of any of my devices. It runs the apps, barely, yet I can't run them on my newer devices.

I don't get how almost 20% could be using Jelly bean still. It came out in 2012! And most phones get an update within a year so you think most of them would have at least been updated to kit kat.

Generally, it's only top of the line phones that receive major upgrades. Mid and lower tier phones rarely get them and are usually stuck with the version they shipped with. That explains why Jelly Bean is still in use. If it ain't broke, why get a new one!

I have manuals, scientific apps, nature apps, and use a very old edition of FB reader. The tablet uses standard USB, so I simply transfer any books downloaded on computer via USB stick. I no longer update any apps since the OS is old. But the apps' databases are still OK. All the apps are self contained and need no connection. I use the tablet at the telescope. The inkBOOK I just bought is running 4.2.2. Good enough to read on, and no Google. Also wifi only. I will not own a network tablet or ereader. |

Google updates a lot of the internal stuff from android without needing to update the os. So even someone on Android 2 versions back still has the latest version of almost all google apps.
Apple updates older hardware to newer os versions but then disables some of the new stuff in the OS as the older hardware is unable to support it. So when it comes to new features its almost the same thing just Apple old devices show a new version of iOS and Android devices don't in the end they both don't get all the new stuff. The one problem with Android is that manufacturers are not releasing security fixes for older devices or if they do not fast enough. |
