Oh, I don't know. I managed to get it to work in Sigil anyway (which means I can uninstall Calibre now, since this was the only reason I installed it!) -- but thanks for the clarification on that, still. Appreciate the help!

Oh, that looks very cool!...

https://www.regexbuddy.com/

...although as I mentiioned earlier, I'm also very happy (if not thrilled!) with the bit of regex script that jbacelar gave me earlier, it's come in handy several times since then, simply making little modifications here and there. So far that's all I need! But I'm definitely saving this suggestion you gave, too, Hitch -- it's quite possible a day will come when I can make use of that, too!

Glad to help. I've purchased RB licenses for all our new folks, as regex-fu is the secret to happy bookmakers, by and large. Highly recommended.

I just noticed that the same company also has another program, Regex Magic...

https://www.regexmagic.com/

If Regex Buddy is essentially "regex for dummies," then it looks like Regex Magic is "regex for complete, utter morons" -- and I have a feeling I might fit into that category more.

Ha ha, do you have any experience with that program, too, Hitch? I guess I'm just wondering if for my purposes, that program might be better. Whaddaya think?

Did you just call me a moron, Psymon? ROFL.

I don't. I figured, knowing me, I'd cheat and take the easy way out. So, I bought RB, not RM, but...in hindsight, I likely should have purchased both for both me and my Crewmembers. I mean...it's not backbreaking, in terms of pure expense, and if you think of saving just ONE hour....yah know?

Oh, interesting -- I thought that RM was the easy way out, compared to RB? That's the impression that I got from the description/comparison of both programs on their website(s). It seemed that RM was sort-of a WYSIWYG (in a way) version of RB.

Re buying them both, they do have a deal on getting both -- and that's retroactive, too, so if you already bought one, you can still get the same deal on buying the other one (in case you didn't notice that). That's nice.

I know, I was teasing. It was too good a setup to let pass.

You're right, it is. It does a lot more of the heavy-lifting for you.

hmmm. No, don't think I did notice. IT's been a while. Hell..I dunno, when was I first hanging out here? '10 or '11? Whenever that was, is when I purchased RB for the first time. Never regretted it, which is more than I can say for MOST of the software I have around here!

So I splurged on the US$40 (about Can$50, for me) on the Regex Magic one, that we also talked about -- the "Regex for Total Morons" version of the "Regex for Dummies" one you mentioned -- and I'm utterly clueless! Even with the tutorials (help files) in it, I can't figure out what the hell I'm supposed to do with it. It's worse than the first time I opened Photoshop, decades ago -- and that I was able to grasp reasonably quickly.

I'll try to give it another shot sometime, but just thought I'd let you know my first impressions of it (even though you're using the "dummies" program, not this "total morons" one that I got).

I'm frustrated...

Patience, Padawan. Regex is *always* like this to learn, and yes, I concur--RB and RM have VERY steep learning curves. The big problem, to my mind, is the layout. It's confusing as hell. IIRC, I spent some time googling around, and I found a few other nerdy types, who had posted stuff, and that got me going in a forward direction.

Sorry if that doesn't help. Did you work through the examples? The browser demos, here: https://www.regexmagic.com/demo.html ? They put the files in, in the Help file under RM Examples, Patterns, Integer?

Also: if you really CANNOT get it, they have a 90-day money back guarantee. I always keep the RB's that a given crew member doesn't install or use; there's always someone else coming down the pike. :-)

Yeah, most definitely -- and just the functionality and "user-friendliness" of it. I was, like, okay I get it, I select a bit of code, create a "match," and then say how I want that match to behave -- and right there, I'm clueless! Even the help files don't seem to be of much help. All I can think is that surely there HAS to be an easier, more sensible way for them to do a program like this.

No, not yet -- I saw mention of those but didn't try them. I'll check that link you gave here.

That's definitely an option I was seriously considering (no poop)!

Have you gotten RM now? I think when this first came up, you'd only been using RB before (for years). I got RM, under the assumption that it would be easier -- just looking at the videos for RB looked like it was rather complex to use. I really don't know, though.

If you've tried both now, do you think for my/our purposes perhaps RB would be better (and easier to use)?

I hate stupid programs like this. Like I said, it's hard for me to believe that they couldn't make this much, much easier and straightforward to use than they have. :/

No, not yet. I've been working on something else, in my "off" hours (ha. Ha, ha, ha.) that has taken up a chunk of my time. I'll see if I can squoosh that in somewhere.

Well, you have 90 days -- er, 88 days now -- to do so and get back to me on that.

Wow. So yesterday I went into Sigil's help files and discovered what the heck "Auto-Tokenise" means -- that, alone, has just changed my whole ebooking life! And even though I don't know exactly what each part of "(.+?)" actually means/does, I do know what the whole shebang together does -- and that, along with "\1", "\2", etc. -- has effectively given me virtually everything that I can imagine I'd ever need to know about Regex.

Omigod! Talk about weird -- just as I'm writing this, an email came in from PayPal notifying me that I just got my refund on RegexMagic! Seriously, talk about a totally odd coincidence. The universe works in mysterious ways...
