I think the Oasis is priced right but when it was announced I dithered for over a week before I decided to buy one: $290 is quite a lot of money for any device.
To my mind, the Paperwhite is a steal at $119. I paid $440 something in 2006 for my first eInk reader because it offered a significant improvements in hardware and new e-book releases. Every reader I’ve had since then cost less than the previous one until the Oasis. It was easier to find improvements I wanted to buy when every upgrade cost less. I liked Oasis’s longer battery life and the lower weight but those alone did not justify the cost. The unknown for me was the shape I had seen before. So I dug my ancient Ebookwise e-reader up from the cupboard bottom and just handled it again. The EB is an old design (developed from the 1990s Rocket Book). It has a large hand-hold with two paging buttons like Oasis except the buttons are much larger. The hold is huge too but it’s what made that EB so comfortable to read from for long periods. The whole rig weighed a pound and an ounce. Even so, it was the most comfortable e-reader—no, the most comfortable book, electronic or paper—that I have ever read from. It was on the basis of that, that I decided to buy an Oasis. I have not regretted it. So no, I do not think it is overpriced. For what it is, the Oasis is priced right. |

For me personally, it does seems over priced. There is no bump in internal memory, no audio for audible (another amazon company), and I hate to say this (because I truly hope this improves), but the kindle interface leaves much to be desired in reading options such as font sizes and types.
Perhaps the limitations of a smaller screen size may be the issue, but I find myself turning more to 3rd party apps on other devices for my e-reading purposes. I do not follow the argument that they are also selling you a case, as most Amazon cases are in of themselves overpriced. There are many 3rd party options that sell for less than 10 dollars and serve my needs perfectly, both in terms of functionality such as the practicality of an origami fold to read hands free and lightness (that they are not made of animals is a plus to me). Another thing that makes the Oasis overpriced for me is the lack of quality in the ones I have seen, as they have a more of a grayer "washed out look." Of course, I could be wrong and there could be an Oasis out there with a nice dark contrast to the fonts, but I have not held one or seen one (even in all the countless youtube reviews, including the Amazon page itself). I'm hoping that the Voyage price comes down in time for my birthday, because I think that even the Voyage is overpriced, as it is over a year old in tech specs. That said, the loads of Oasis reviews have moved me towards wanting to purchase a Voyage to be my default e-ink reader. Last edited by ArthurianLegends; 06-12-2016 at 02:57 PM. |

I haven't seen an Oasis in hand yet, but I do think it's a niche market. So it's priced for that market. Would I buy an Oasis at this price ? No , but I buy all my devices on sale. The Oasis will come down eventually also.

I think the Oasis (as well as the Voyage, which I had for a while) are overpriced. My concern is with the software. It is tolerable (and yes, it is very stable, which is great) but many new features only work with Amazon books and the software gives the impression that the devices are only there to sell you stuff. And I really dont want to spend a lot of money for what feels more like a mobile storefront than like an ereader that treats all of its content in the same way...

She also said she bought a 10000 mah power pack. Hope this helps. She is also saying there were complaints about the lighting and that putting it in a cover makes it heavy. Oh and every word she typed is correct, but her phrasing is sometimes hard to read. Last edited by Cinisajoy; 07-21-2016 at 07:42 PM. |

I am someone who has little willpower when it comes to new gadgets. I have had every generation of e-ink Kindle but I passed on the Oasis. I don't like the shape, I don't like the fact that the ereader is pretty much tied to the cover, and I don't like the fact that they got rid of the auto adjust light. It doesn't help that I've heard many people have screen issues, although I'm aware that issue is very subjective.
Still happy with my Voyage. |
