That's been fixed with current Gen3s; I agree - it was an issue with the 64MB models.
I didn't realize the "leading" was tied to the font. That would be worth playing with - if I liked the Cybook enough to take the time. And I'm just not willing to spend another $400 to see if the 512MB model is really better.

It would be so nice if all these readers would be carried in retail stores so we could test-drive them before ordering.

It was actually the Sony 505 on display at Borders that kept tempting me to upgrade initially from the 500. The screen really was so much brighter - on the 505 and the Cybook, too. I was perfectly happy with my 500 until I played with the 505 (even though I prefer the button placement on my old 500).

I got my Sony off of eBay.. (I am quite fond of eBay - although you have to be careful).

It was about $A350 when the dust cleared.. Came nicely packed and delivered to Sydney within a week (UPS). It was $US279 and $US49 postage. (postage from the states is a pain - I can get stuff airmail from the UK for a quarter of the postage of stuff from the US).

Nice unit. Most of my stuff is from Fictionwise and Baen. They both have Sony format. Calibre does a nice job of converting MSReader and Mobipocket as long as they are DRM free. PDF's are a bit iffy. I've had mixed results.

if you want to try out a reader before buying it, take a look at the hookup thread, to see if any kind-hearted mr members live near you and would be willing to give you a demo over coffee. also keep an eye open for a meetup in your area (check the lounge for meetup threads), which is an opportunity to see several different readers.

Pox67, if you're in Melbourne, please feel free to come in for a Cybook or iLiad demo. PM if you'd like my contact details, or email iliad@ DA's website.

Or you can have a demo at Dymocks George St Sydney store - Dymocks sell iLiads and Cybooks.

montsnmags, thanks for the mention

I don't think Dymocks sell the Cybook, do they? They just have both Iliads (2nd Edition and Book Edition), yeah?

Cheers,

Well, blow me down, I didn't know that! They don't seem to make it obvious like they do the Iliad, unless I'm missing something (perfectly possible), but I just did the search on their website, and, sure enough, up comes the Cybook (no details, no picture, no description even of what it is).

There you go. Last time I complained about Clive James' Cultural Amnesia not being available as an ebook, it turned out things had changed since the last time I looked, so, just in case, let me just say "There's not a million dollars in my bank account" (You never know - it might work ).

By the way, does DA Direct have any relationship with Dymocks? (just a curiosity question here)

Cheers, and thanks for the info,
Marc

DA Direct is an independent Australian-owned company, with branches in Melbourne, Singapore and New York. DA is Australia's largest full service library supplier.

Info at http://www.dadirect.com/Welcome/aboutda.asp (Hey, I'm in that photo, too!)

Can you tell me how you 'started transforming and formatting ebooks into text files to read on a Cowon D2'. I have tried to use abc amber lit but don't know where to begin.

diagun, over on the iAudiophile forums there are a couple of options. Someone made an online formatter where you drop the text in and somone else told me the formatting to use in a text editor. That was a while ago though so someone might have come up with an easier way as well.

Very handy place for Cowon D2 info.

pox67-thanks for your response. I have spent hours on the iAudiophile forums but can't figure it out. I need baby steps to get there but will keep reading and trying. I thought mobipocket was the answer but that didn't work either. Oh, well. I'll keep trying.
