I only notice the color change rarely. I know its there on my Oasis, I don't have it on my Voyage. The only time on my Oasis when I notice is when the light is either turned to bright for the inside dimness I have, or if I am in a place where light is strange. I can't explain it better. I can read in bed with just a side lamp at light 8 and the screen is even, I don't see the color shift or the cones in that situation.
During the day, I have my light at 10 maybe 11 and don't see any shift either. When I am reading inside. Outside I don't see anything but an even screen like all kindles. So although I know there is a shift, I can see it if I turn the light higher and higher just to test, but in my reading conditions it is not there. I could not read say on 14 or 17 inside. Screen looks like its glowing, which for me defeats the purpose of e-ink. If someone needed the light that high, I don't think they would be happy with my Oasis. But for me at light up to 11, the shift and the cones are not visible at all. The contrast of the Oasis and the Voyage is about the same in my case. But my Voyage can be turned up and never does one see any cones or any shift. But I don't use it higher than 11 either. I do think that the brain can adjust to certain things. Even in conditions when the cones are there a tad bit, when its really dreary out its hard to find just the right setting. After I read for a while, I don't see the cone shadows anymore, or the possible warmer tone on one side. Thankfully those conditions are rare and just in some light conditions. |

But the screens are consistent once you factor in different people's expectation, whether a "defect" (you will ALWAYS see the lights on a side lit plane) bothers you or not, psycho-optical influences and simply the fovea. Given that you only see an area approx. the size of your thumbnail in focus (fovea) your brain makes up the rest of the picture. IIRC your eyes operate at around 50 frames per second.

The variability in screens in the real world use is far less of a factor than people think it is. |

When I noticed the two-toned effect of my Voyage screen (almost immediately) I very mistakenly thought I'd have no trouble getting used to it so I didn't return it. That experience probably made me look at the Oasis screen much more carefully though. Fortunately for me its small imperfections (faint smudgy areas along the side in some lighting conditions, comparatively slight color shift, text not as black as that on the Voyage) don't bother me at all. The battery arrangement is taking a bit of adjustment on my part (mostly due to my habit of buying multiple cases for all my devices ![]() ![]() |

Another thing about the Oasis that hasn't been talked about here yet, is how do the covers hold up in outdoor environments ? This got me thinking when I mentioned this in another thread, about not seeing Oasis devices on beaches this weekend during the heatwave busy Memorial Day weekend. I did see lots of other e ink readers though. Amazon does use woman sitting on the beach in it's Oasis ad. So maybe folks are bringing other e inks instead of their premium Oasis. Not just for the price, but maybe more to do with, not taking a chance with the device, sun screen will add to the slipperiness and it could be almost impossible to hold on to the Oasis. Also the premium covers, they may not look as nice with with bug spray ( Camping ) on your hands or sun screen. I would think that they could leave residue or prints on the covers that can't be cleaned off. With all other e ink devices you could get a cheaper cover to replace it. I don't know, but maybe that's why I have not seen an Oasis. Maybe they are being pampered more by owners, just bringing them out when they can use them at work or home, outside on the deck or vacation balcony while able to safely put them back in the cover , before they head out into messier environments ? I don't know has anyone used them camping or at the beach yet ? Or would you rather take something else to read on instead ?
