The Kobo may very well last longer because I turn on wireless less frequently and for less time, that's true

I didn't realize I could update the metadata in the Kindle for a book I didn't sideload. That may well help with preferring the Kindle since it isn't often Kobo has a book Amazon doesn't or at a better price. And I learned today Amazon has the Kindle First program and the Kindle Owners Lending Library.

A tablet is fine indoors with the windows closed, but it doesn't work well for me outside or even inside of my back is to the general direction of an open window. I use my tablet and phone periodically, but when I forget my reader or can't really pull it out easily, which is rarely enough.

I was just being honest with you.
Now as to Kindle First, please note that it is mostly self-published and small publishers.
And that KOLL is one book per month if and only if you have Amazon prime.

As per the reading unless you are into special fonts and a very few other things, both read the same.

Yea, I know about the restrictions on KOLL, but I didn't realize Kindle First was mostly self-published. I found one this month I want to read, and it's no extra for me. KOLL can probably save me the hassle of searching for a book at the library and waiting for it, or save me the cost of purchasing it if I don't actually like it, so yea the restriction isn't great but it's basically a free book per month. My wife has Prime and I get access to most of the Prime benefits by being in the same Amazon Household as her. The libraries I have access to don't always have a great selection for books I'm looking for. Which is understandable, there's probably not much demand for high fantasy and hard SF relative to their whole catalog.

Since you like high fantasy and hard SF, you might try kindle unlimited.
That was what I was thinking of, not kindle first.
If I remember kindle first is one of four books offered free to prime users only.
You own the kindle first book.
I think they are all Amazon exclusives.

My opinion is, I like the Kobo better as a device. But if you are talking about which STORE you like better that goes with your device, I would choose the Kindle store, and therefore, the Kindle device. While I do buy as often as I can from the Kobo store, there are many advantages to buying from the Kindle store. A big one, for me, is the ability to buy discounted audio books (whispersync for voice) when I borrow, buy, or get free, the Kindle ebook. If you are not format shifting, then decide which store YOU like better, for your needs/selection, and then based on that, pick which device to use the most.
