My current favorite SF author is Ted Chiang. He only writes shorts (thus far).

I've learned that it's fairly easy for an author to throw several hundred-thousand words at me and get many of them to "stick." But an author who manages to hook me with 7,500 - 40,000 words is an author whose novels I'm going to really look forward to. But, yeah ... those Expanse backstory novellas and short-stories are great, too. I'm a short-stuff in the morning, novels in the afternoon/evening kind of guy. | |

Chiang IS quite talented. But it was always Ken Liu's short stories that tugged on something in me when I read them. His first novel, though I like it well enough, didn't do nearly as much for me.

I've read all but two of the nominated novel authors, and have heard of all the winners and many of the nominees, though not via Mobileread. I'm more in touch with Australian SF than US, but the list is still fairly familiar.
