Very well, fine.

If your niche use is a surprising need to listen to audio and read ebooks on the same device, then just like manga readers you will want expandable storage.
And most people still have no actual need whatsoever.

Just because YOU have no need for a card slot does not mean you have to keep on telling others there is no need for such.

I didn't say there is no need.
I said most people don't need it.

There is a difference.

And I will keep telling whoever I want, since I happen to be right.

(Same logic applies to every other eReader, including the Kindle Paperwhite which has (shudder) a measly 1.5 GB and about a year's worth of books.)

What if your friend does not share your irrational attachment to a card slot?

How much storage did you actually use on your Astak anyway?

TE Book Converter?

What do you mean by "civilized front end for the tools from Calibre"? Is that "provides no options for customizing the ebook-convert settings"?
It appears the primary reason for using it is if one only wants to format-shift and cannot stand the idea of storing your books in a managed (and manageable) library.
Well, okay then, if that floats you boat... but I challenge your assertion that calibre makes messes. It doesn't make any messes whatsoever, it just organizes your books in a way that precludes your own preexisting folder-based structure.

Regardless, you can still just convert all your books to a suitable format. Of course, since you insist on micro-managing the ebook files it will take longer to trigger manual conversions, which I guess explains why you are so hesitant to convert and instead want a nonexistent device which supports every format out there.

I wish you the best of luck in finding what you need.

Are you really saying that people go through their trash to find stuff they need that they threw away?
Most people I know do not go through their trash.
Now years ago I did know a couple that did eat behind restaurants.

I think your analogy would have worked better if you said a closet or a garage.
Now where did I put that dress?

Thumbs up Indeed.

Thanks Cinisajoy.
No luck needed as I already found what my friend wants.

I think you might be more correct to say that most people do not ADMIT to needing to go through their trash !!

Also I wholeheartedly agree with your additions to my analogy:
Closets and/or garages tend to be like trash heaps as well.

I wish you all the best in finding that dress !!!

Which of course means that your friend who might not have the same storage requirements will not get to know about devices that meat their needs.

Higher res means nothing to me as I usually have to use enlarged text;
The higher resolution also means that quality of the displayed text is better. I found that when I moved up in resolution I could choose smaller font (the size as displayed when the device where next to each other, not the number describing the font size) and it was still easier to read than the lower resolution screen.

Which means you are advising people to tie their hands behind the back rather than use a tool that with a little thought is more likely to help than hinder.

What about a device whose internal SD card can be removed and replaced? It's not as simple, but if the purpose is to increase the overall storage, then it works.

You seem to have a lot of odd ideas regarding how people should manage their computers/digital resources.

Given that you believe most people dump all their garbage on the computer and dig through their IRL trash for the old food they threw out last week, I can only imagine that we are all disorganized enough to seriously need more indexing tools like calibre!
But as it happens, I cannot speak for most people but I certainly do not do something so ill-advised as to treat valuable data with such scornful hatred. My data is sorted in order that I can find it when I need it. And I don't go digging through heaps of smelly, slimy trash in order to rescue things I never threw away because it wasn't trash.

It seems we have irreconcilable differences. I don't think I have anything to say regarding your initial queries, I guess.

I really strongly suggest that your friend personally try out a number of different devices before making their decision. And possibly, if they're unsure about which devices have the features _they_ want, that they ask advice here personally.

In rare and unusual circumstances, maybe.

The implication of the OP is that this should be a regular routine, rather than a weird and very accidental accident.

Bathroom trash, No.
Kitchen trash, No.
Craft room trash, yes.
Though I do believe I have lost some spoons to the trash.
And I doubt very seriously I am a better person than you.

Cool Sheesh.

Thanks for replying Davidfor.
Your POV in this matter seems to avoid the possibilities that my friend and I know one another very well, get along splendidly, and have quite bluntly discussed these things openly and with equal distaste for the same aspects.

Which in fact - we have.

Also - many of the replies here revolve around presumptions of being invited to criticize (which they were NOT) as well as trying to force THEIR tastes or preferences upon the OP & friend (me, etc...).

What comes to mind for me in such matters are those who are either very well endowed financially and/or just young and/or very ambitious materially.

Such folks seem to think that their material ambitions MUST assuredly apply to ALL others - which is patently incorrect.

Speaking as someone who is no longer any of those qualifiers, and knowing with complete certainty that this wonderful friend is in the same place in life - I can say with confidence that our preferences are in harmony in this matter.

No flashy, fancy, (or what we would call...) excessive stuff is needed; there is no need to try multiple different things to find the 'right' one, etc...

Myself & friend have already had (as examples) Kindles - and found them to be sorely lacking in all the ways mentioned in my OP.

I will conclude my participation in this thread, thusly:
Perhaps the reader simply adores vanilla icecream, just as it is - and perhaps I totally adore extra dark double chocolate walnut crunch icecream with sprinkles on it.

Do I have any 'right' or place - telling you, dear reader - that you are somehow WRONG for your preferences ??
Is it your place or 'right' telling me that I am somehow 'wrong' for mine ??

I think not (Nor will it matter either way).
(Both people mentioned in this thread are also happy Linux & XP users, despite all the crud thrown around about those things...)

The only WIN here is when folks have what they desire and can be content with it - which has already been seen to as described previously, up^ there.

OK, enough of my yakking here - I have places to go & things to do so must vacate my chair to attend to those needs.

Best Wishes to All for Peace & Abundance !!
