When I read in pitch black conditions, I find using my kindle for iPads black screen and white text much better.

The PW1 lighting does get uneven when reading in the dark at anything below 5 on mine. I never had to deal with color blobs though like some have. I really thought front lit eReaders were all like that and switched to tablets for night reading but my Kobo Glo HD has such perfect even lighting I can read in the dark with no problems. There is no splotchiness or uneven lighting so front lit technology has come a long way since the Paperwhite was released. The higher ppi too is a big improvement so upgrading to a newer reader I highly recommend.

I have both the PW2 and voyage. I do have eye issues with light. I keep my voyage and PW2 at a level 10 went reading I never read at night with out my lamp on my night stand. And I leave the light level on my devices at a 10. I do not have any problems with it. But I do have to say that due to my eye issues that my glasses do have a tint to them and that tint does change with the light levels.

Are you looking at the PW as soon as you turn it on? Turn the lights away from your eyes for a few seconds until your eyes adjust to the new light in the room.

Some of us don't have the luxury of having a light on at night so reading in the dark is the only option as to not wake a spouse. In the old days I used a book light with my K3 or K4. He was always complaining. I was so disappointed in the front lit technology of the PW1 for years I switched to reading on my Nexus 7 as it's easier on my eyes than old eInk technology. I took a huge chance on buying eInk again but the higher ppi and better lighting has taken away any eye strain.
My PW1 at 10 would be blinding in the dark. 8 was the setting I used during the day but in the dark 6. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk |

Yeah, just compared my PW1 & PW3 with windows blinds down to refresh my memory. Make that more like PW1 level 0 = PW3 level ~4,5 (and level 1 = level 5)
![]() IMHO no one could read on PW3 with levels 0-3 (and those levels can only be used to find your PW3 in the dark), maybe even 4 ... with it being the only light source, while PW1 on levels 4 and 5 is already killing my eyes and is readable on levels 0 and 1. On PW3 there is significant increase of light starting with 5,6 and 7. I think those changes on lowest levels were made with PW2 and are for the better IMO. I'm 30 year old with perfect eyesight and most of the time read indoors after sunset on my PW3 using levels 8-11 + floor lamp (or around level 6 during daylight hours) , always preferring for ambient light to do most of the illumination as opposed to just upping the level of built-in light. The only time I've read in total darkness was when there was no electricity and I've always went to my Nexus 4 with Lux app installed (and light temperature changed) after brief struggle with PW1 crappy clouds. Never even tried reading in the dark on my PW3, but short look at its screen in total dark shows much much more evenly lit screen and better contrast. But still I wouldn't read in the dark :P Last edited by shamanNS; 04-20-2016 at 12:51 PM. |

Heh, and fullpage refresh every X pages on nightmode (when it's flash of white instead of black) doesn't blind you in the dark? I find it jarring during daylight let alone in total darkness...

I think reading in the dark is just bad. Here are my dumb suggestions
1/ go read in another room 2/ put blinders on hubby/wife 3/ put bed side lamp on a dinner switch and turn light up veeerrryy slowly. This will train hubby/wife to sleep with night light. 4/ profit (or divorce?) |
