Kindle Personal Docs were merged with Cloud Drive (but didn't count against Cloud Drive storage allocation) about 18 months ago. Sounds as if they've been separated again.

Thank you for posting this, which got me the actual answers I've been looking for...for days. I'm pretty angry after dealing with it all day and wanted to put in what I have found out.
First, Amazon will not discuss this issue in email or on chat. They demand phone calls only. I plan to try to record a phone call soon. When Amazon made the cloud drive accessible to kindle, they made the "send to kindle" file folder accessible in the cloud drive. It was great. You sent a file to your kindle or fire and if you needed to get it to a non kindle device, you just logged in and pulled it out of the folder. They changed this in April with a notice in the account, not to the email. They are trying to keep it quiet. Any book that has been sent through the "send to kindle" service in the app or via email since April has NOT been added to the online folder. If you have sent it and it is not in that folder, it is not accessible outside of the Kindle system. The file exists but you will never be able to retrieve it. Delete it or send it to another Kindle, yes. Access it again, no. For me, I had uploaded books to my account with no problem. I own them, legitimately paid for. Some of the things I uploaded were personal documents I wanted to access to when I might have a Kindle with me. I sent them from the app and marked it so that a copy is kept. They showed up in my Kindle fine. Tonight I went into the Save to Kindle folder to retrieve a very important document I sent a few weeks ago whose only copy was deleted accidentally. I went to the folder and there is nothing there since April! I could see them on my Kindle. I found the note and your post and made some calls. Yes, I can see it on the Kindle and read it on the Kindle but the file now belongs to Amazon's ether and it can not be accessed anymore. I am welcome to delete it but not download it again to any other computer or book reader. So, if you send it to Kindle, it goes into some sort of "hidden" space. This is a regression to the dark age of what it was like before Amazon joined Kindle to their cloud several years ago. The files were not accessible then and I was looking for another ebook reader. They belong only to your Kindle account and another Kindle device now and the backups are not accessible for any reason. So disappointing. |

2. Connect your Kindle to your PC using a USB cable. 3. Open "Windows Explorer" and navigate to the "documents" folder on the external drive that the Kindle mounts as. 4. Copy the document from that folder onto your own drive. Problem solved. That really wasn't too hard, was it? |

PS I think there was something about this in email, though it was quite obscure. I remember reading a discussion here, about it. |

Indeed. Although it should be noted that you can only get the post-conversion form, and IIRC the Cloud Drive copy they used to keep was the pre-conversion format.

I got the same email. It appears they are changing applications. It did say there would be a new desktop version.

My new fire has a documents app, but it no longer has a documents tab on main menu so documents not in the cloud drive may have to be recovered by sending them first to Kindle For PC ( & I am not sure that is even possible ? ), or to some very old amazon device that does not support KFX Last edited by stumped; 06-15-2016 at 01:53 PM. |

as a test I send 3 docs via email to fire. a txt, a doc, and a docx
each appears, after downloading wihtin the local storage tab of the doc app, but as a goobledygoog_PDOC.prc name ( the correct name appears on the send to kindle tab) i can see 3 new fiels with the same gobbledydook names in storage/emulated/0/documents. when I try to open one I am aksed to choose a default app: kindle or moon+ , I choose kindle. I see correct files name and contents when i open a .prc. i also get the fiel name and the send-from email address in the kindle app top line title space. formatting within what were doc and docx looks well preserved. so the document type : txt, doc, docx is removed in transit, and it would be trial and error to locate one of a larger number of pdocs for copying to PC, but it could be done. I see now way to access these in Kindle for PC. that is not on the supported devices list for this pdoc transfer process. had i used dropbox instead though,, I'd have the original word formats and Id be able to edit on the device; there is a bundled WPS for amazon app on the fire, and in my app library there is OFficeSuite Professional from back when that was a free app of the day . I suspect that .prc files are not locally editable but I leave that for others to test. |
