Hmmmm. Yet their guidelines (the PDF) doesn't say so, when I looked just recently. I'm not kidding--I just sent an ePUB2 up there in the immediate near past. No problems. WEIRD. I'm glad to know it, though!

The comment about the "required" size for the interior images is a dead giveaway. Man, this would sure put the hurt on anyone daft enough to use them to distribute everywhere (Amazon included), with the interior image sizes. Hmph. Crappity, now I have to ask every client if they'll be using IS.

The problem is: there is no EPUB3/enhancedEPUB3. There is EPUB3. When a EPUB3 become a enriched EPUB3? Javascript? CSS3? Media overlay? Canvas? CFI? It is very silly request.

Well, that's kind of you, but I must say: this ePUB3 thing with IS is utterly DAFT. Other than iBooks, and desktop-based readers like Azardi or Readium, what the hell out there uses ePUB3? Dedicated reader-wise?

Freaking Apple, at it again. And worse...even THEY take ePUB2! I mean, can you imagine? This ocean of self-pubbers. "Artisanal publishers." DIY Authors...all trying to make ePUB3? Do you think whoever is in charge of intake at IS pulled wings off of flies, when he was young? Or some other behavior that would put him in the sights of Profilers?

Crap, why don't we just send those authors out into the wilderness with a Bowie Knife, and tell them not to come back until they've written their masterpiece on skinned Bison hide, written in the blood of a panther? Might as well.

ADE now supports ePub 3 in their latest version. Kindle claims that their version can be based on ePub 3.

That's only partially true. KindleGen supports only a subset of ePub3 and CSS3 and fixed-layout Kindle books need to be encoded using Amazon-specific ePub3 extensions.

OTOH, the test file that Amazon provided for the Kindle Previewer 3 beta version is actually an ePub3 book.

I.e., valid simple ePub3 books can be compiled without further adjustments.

That is why I mentioned "claimed". The fixed-layout format is an afterthought in ePub 3 and designed as a reaction to the efforts of Amazon, Apple and others. I think it has its place but it remains to be seen if the companies that really came up with it will adopt the ePub 3 version, which is a watered down attempt IMHO. That being said, fixed layout, is a niche market and not part of the ePub 3 mainstream.

Do you really think this? Actually I fear the EPUB3 fixed with multimedia and javascript is the place where there is most support by EPUB3 reader and where publishers prefer to work.

I see javascript and multimedia as different from a Fixed Format. There is nothing about those features that is limited to fixed format, the data can still flow.

Yes. But I wish bygod that "multi-media" had become a separate format, for all intents and purposes. Something else. Like a bloody app. I mean, what does EVERYONE think of, really, when they hear ePUB3? FXL and multi-media. Not anything else.

I see javascript and multimedia as different from eBooks, for the love of whatever. I mean..yes, javascript textbox/footnote pop-ups would be LOVERLY. To me, that makes sense as a book. (n.b.: IF we ever had a viable, realistic, eBook-verse wide process/display mechanism for indices, that might be great, too. But, like a unicorn, that's a long way off.)

And, yes: I would never argue that for some learning environment books, like cookbooks, "how to repair your <insert thing here>," etc., that video would and could be really valuable. But without a tablet device suited to seeing those things, putting multimedia into an eBook is...a lipsticked pig.

Oh, yes. You can see here some works we do one year ago (sorry, italian language).
But: actually the support for interactive/javascript in reflow is very poor. Try to have text reflow in columns, or add elements in dom, or create islands of text, or save data in localstorage...

The fixed way is like Darth Vader one. Is it easier.
