Can't hurt! The inline TOC will get tagged automatically anyway.

Semantic tags are useful if the file names are meaningless - eg file001.html.
Suggestion - if a file has a Semantic tag then maybe it could be shown in Tools->Reports->Files BR |

There's an excellent automatic system to name a string of files "Chapter_01", "Chapter_02" etc. - just select them all and rename the top one. |

I was mainly thinking of front and back matter - renaming files to HalfTitle, Acknowledgements, Preface, Colophon, Foreword, References, Notes, Maps etc etc is tedious - easier to give them a Semantic tag
'Cept there's no Semantic tags for Maps and HalfTitle ![]() BR |

Do these semantic tags also get used in any Kindle book that may be made from the EPUB? |

I put it in there whenever I clean up a book. I figure it only takes a few seconds...and IF future readers use it it will already be there. I also change file names as mentioned above.

Epub3 does allow a much longer list of semantic types than epub2. That said, if you read the epub2 (2.0.1) spec for guide semantics they give the list we have plus add the fact that you can create your own types for those not listed by prefixing the semantic with the string "other.".
Notice the period. So epubcheck should certainly allow things like "other.halftitle" and "other.maps" as valid entries in the guide for epub2 as it is clearly allowed in the spec. I know of no readers that use those values but I could easily extend the epub2 add semantics dialog to include and use these "other." prefixed types if anyone is interested in using them for epub2. epub3 already has a much longer list of allowed Semantic types for use in nav landmarks. I stand by my original suggestion - include the Semantic Tag assigned to a file in the Files Report. BR |

IMHO, that would be overkill. You can quickly see all assigned semantics by looking at the guide section in the .opf file of ePub2 books or the landmarks section of the .nav file of ePub3 books. |

Having it in the Files Reports would tell me which files don't have a Semantic Type (ST). But, something I hadn't realised until now is that any one ST can only be applied to one file - I knew a file couldn't have a multiple STs, but didn't appreciate reverse was true -- i.e the relationship must to be 1:1. That means I can't have a book with 4 files marked Notes or 3 marked Index. It explains my - "I'm sure I marked that file as Notes" - puzzlements I've been interpreting the word 'semantic' according to its common/normal/classical adjectival meaning; that it's sometimes used in this context as a noun <cringe, sigh> should have warned me. The wombat has the measure of it - rename the files ![]() "Semantics created some of us, and Syntaxes the rest of us" - BetterRed's Better Half in a Balmain pub - circa 1986 BR Last edited by BetterRed; 03-28-2016 at 05:35 AM. |

That's what I thought, too, because Sigl won't let you assign the same semantics type to multiple files in ePub2 books, but in ePub3 books you can actually assign the same semantics type to multiple files. For example, you can assign chapter to multiple .xhtml types. |

I wonder what possessed TPTB to impose the '1 ST : 1 File' restriction in EPUB2. But the fact that EPUB3 has dispossessed itself of that peculiarity brings me back full circle to wanting the ST in the Files Report - I use the Reports feature quite a lot. It would also be good if Files report had the means to order the files as they appear in the 'Book Browser'. I'll post a CR at gitsclub github. I'll also convert one of my 'Test EPUBs' to EPUB3 and have a looksee BR Last edited by BetterRed; 03-28-2016 at 06:22 AM. |

One stupid question: once you've added a sematic tag in Sigil, how can you remove it without editing directly in the .opf file? I presume to change one you just add another one, but to remove it altogether?

It toggles. If you re-add the same semantic to the same file it will turn it off.
