On my laptop both plugins are green.

Calibre has always been set up like this, it's only from this week that Calibre on my laptop doesn't see my SDCard.

I checked on hubbys laptop, which does see the SDCard inside the Kobo, and that is set up in the same way as mine, both the Kobo Touch and the Kobo Touch extended plugins are green. He is running Claibre 2.5.3 same as me.
This is one of those cases where 'just because I was getting away with ignoring directions' does not indicate that you can continue to expect it to work.

If all else fails, try following the directions

Exactly what directions have I supposed to have mucked up?

It's all well and good having a go at me but it would be nice I knew what I had done wrong.

I have had Calibre set up like this since I bought my first Kobo so I have no idea what you are talking about.

Use the button enable/disable (at the bottom) to change the condition on one of those

The original reason I installed both plugins was because I had no idea which one I needed for what I was setting up (that is as true today as it was then). I just wanted to manage the collections on the Kobo through Calibre and send Kepub instead of epub to the Kobo.

My laptop is currently installing updates so as soon as that is finished I will try disabling one at a time and seeing if that makes any difference.

In that case, you need the extended driver.

As an update. I had to install 76 windows updates today, for some reason my pc hadn't done an update since early November last year! That and disabling the Kobo Touch plugin appears to have solved the problem although I do think I have a couple of dodgy USB ports. Time will tell if its a permanent fix.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to post on here but if it happens again i'll just workaround the issue.

I had the issue again today with my Pocketbook as I had reinstalled an old system backup. I uninstalled a lot of greyed out USB devices in USB Deview and that did the trick. Windows reinstalls any USB drivers necessary.

While I had access to the SD card via Calibre I sorted out the books on my kobo into two sets, the add, read and delete are now on the device storage, the stay permanently on the kobo are on the SD card. They are tagged suitably on Calibre so if Calibre doesn't see my SD card it's not such a problem. I still think my USB ports are flaky so it's just waiting and seeing what happens.

Thanks for mentioning USB Deview, I'd forgotten it's name so I can now download it again. I'm sure I had the problem once before (maybe on a Sony) and that's the program I used to fix it.
