Thanks for this! I wasn't sure how to look it up. I checked four of my five Kindles this morning and they all are up to date.

Manually updating one, if it turns up and isn't up to date, seems much more manageable than having to manually update five devices from three generations.

I hadn't seen anything before this, either. I tend to keep my old keyboard model offline these days to make the battery last a bit longer, but I do sign in every now and again to collect new books. I did have a suspiciously slow download a few weeks ago, though, so maybe it was updating itself then.

Assuming this change even applies to the UK.

I've never had such an e-mail. Maybe it's not necessary for the somewhat newer Kindles; my Paperwhite is a Gen1 from 2012, and the latest firmware is still 5.6.1.1, which I have had installed for a long time.

Then you don't need the update. They only send it to people who do need to upgrade (reasonably enough).

Every time I went to Amazon, I could see a green box with text telling me that I needed to upgrade.

After "upgrading" my Kindle DX-G to the same software version number, I then had 3 documents on it from Amazon, saying that it had been updated and that everything was fine, hunkey-Dorey, and Jim-Dandy-To-The-Rescue.

I then upgraded my Kindle PW and my Kindle Voyage. I also checked my other devices to see if they were current.

Everything is now fine.
