That upstart script lives in the Amazon portion of the filesystem, the part that gets overwritten in an update.

Which is why it matters what you do and in what order. ... Since the OP said: update 5.7.3 ==> working jailbreak ==> Factory Reset Things *should* be in place. Hopefully it is still there. We are waiting on some answers to NiLuJe's question. |

Now I am more likely to believe that's my problem, not 5.7.3's. Factory reset is dangerous for dummies who don't know what they are doing. |

@irreld: Then you're doing something wrong or using an outdated hotfix.
You have to use the "Upadte Your Kindle" link, rebooting won't work: it'll either delete the package silently, or fail with a particular error code (3? Can't remember, it's a terrible idea, don't do it). The "invalid package" popup on USB unplug without even necessarily having time to hit the UYK link simply means the package is outdated. On the other hand, if the updater does launch but fail with a U007 error, then it means you definitively borked the jailbreak. |

If a PW3 has 5.7.2 on it and you do a factory reset, does it end up with the firmware that the PW3 originally came with?

It ends up with the 5.7.2 version and all user additions gone. "user additions" - books, notes, mobileread add-ins, etc. Stay away from 'factory reset' unless it is your only choice to throwing the Kindle in the junk bin. Any condition other than 'already junk' will only be made worse. Last edited by knc1; 03-18-2016 at 08:29 AM. |

Guess a Kindle factory reset is nothing like a Kobo factory reset. With a Kobo factory reset, you do go back to the original firmware.

That is one of the other design choices in embedded system design, to keep the original (or prior) firmware archive on the device. Amazon went with the 'dual boot' alternative. (Well, the K1 had a 'primary and secondary' system image setup - but I assume you don't have a K1.) |

I don't have a Kindle. But I do have a friend who has a PW3 that was upgraded to 5.7.2 and wants to go back to be able to jailbreak.

I thought Factory Resets don't erase the JB.

They erase the jailbreak's 'survival kit'.
If you follow a factory reset with an Amazon image update, the image update over-writes the jailbreak (certificate). THEN you don't have a jailbreak, nor any way for it to self-reinstall. |

I guess you thought wrong.
The JB has several components, and while all is not lost if you do perform a factory reset, it still requires very specific steps to be immediately taken. And a firmware update will erase the last and final component, if you haven't taken those steps. |

Correct.
It is the manual fix that trips people up. Until it's too late. ![]() Add to that, the fact that there is never a good reason to use a factory reset. (Unless in highly specific circumstances, if instructed to do so as part of a debricking procedure or similar. IOW, you know if that is the case.) Last edited by eschwartz; 03-22-2016 at 11:47 AM. |
