My upgrade was done when new e-readers provided significant new features. I suspect that might be the reason for many here.

Vizplex -> Pearl -> Carta
167 ppi -> 212ppi -> 264 ppi -> 300ppi
6 inch screens, 6.8 inch screens, 5,8,9.7, 13.3 etc..
Unlighted -> Lit screens

I do think that this golden era of advancements has stalled and ereader tech has plateaued since last year, which might result in fewer upgrades until colour or flexible screens etc roll along.
