Right, but if you have a backup, you get the option to restore the backup after doing a reset. What he's trying to establish is whether the backup does what he needs it to do, and we're also lamenting the removal of a manual backup option because it's really nice to be able to manually run a backup right before doing a reset.

That doesn't backup app settings and data, just the apps. To backup app settings and data you either need to be rooted or use Amazon's backup.

Thanks for continuing to give me feedback, Katie.

My inability to use the USB cable successfully, to access my Fire and transfer files that way, is reason I haven't been able to transfer apps to the SD card. And it's the reason why this problem began in the first place. That's why I was using Calibre Companion as an alternative, to get ebooks from my computer's Calibre to the Fire. So transferring backups of anything, manually, to the card or to the external hard drive isn't possible.

To clarify the issue, I don't want a separate, extra backup to my external drive, to the SD card, or anywhere else. I just want to know that my 'automatic backup' to Amazon Cloud is working. That's why I was asking about the 'old' Manual Backup setting, that appears to have been discontinued. When you go to your Amazon Cloud site, online, there's no indication there (as least as far as I can see) that you've successfully backed up.

You can probably feel my frustration. I will probably have to do a full 're-set to Factory Default' and just take my chances.

Once again, it's not a problem about my 16,500 ebooks. They're very safely backed up in two different places.

I hope you'll hear good news from me soon!

Fixing the Fire HD 10 with a Factory Reset

That's the $64,000 question, Katie.

Apart from buying a brand new Fire HD 10 and throwing this one away, or going through the agonising process of trying to get it replaced from a re-seller half a world away (Amazon doesn't sell the Fire HD 10 directly to Australia), trying a factory defaults reset is the last resort.

(BTW, my wife actually wants me to throw it away and buy a new one! No joking. She's heard enough about this problem. )

Thanks very much to everyone who gave me feedback. If you read my other thread, regarding my Calibre not consistently talking to my Fire (which is why I began this particular thread in the first place) you'll have heard that once I followed advice from theducks and disabled suspension on my laptop's USB ports (Windows 10), the problem seems to have disappeared . . . at least, so far. Fingers crossed. Am looking forward to discussions with other Fire owners in the future, hopefully under less stressful conditions!

1) I had the opposite experience - Windows 10 has been more memory efficient than 7 for me. (I never installed 8.)

2) I'm curious how much RAM he's telling you he needs. Is it a desktop or laptop computer? I can get 16GB (2 sticks of 8GB) of good quality desktop RAM for less than $100 right now.

You sure he's not just trying to get a RAM upgrade and blaming it on Windows 10?
