The usual cause:
Not moving the file named jb from the unpacked zip directory named jb to the visible root of USB storage (along side the /documents directory).

If you have that - then just try two or three times in a row.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to jailbreak my PW2 5.6.5 following these instructions. I get the jailbreak sucess message after visiting the website (repeated several times in a row) and running ;fc-cache. Then I replug the usb cable and copy the hotfix, but as soon as I unmount my Kindle in Linux it pops the Update Error message saying an invalid update file was uploaded. I have tried it with airplane mode on, off, after sucessfully jailbreaking 3 times in a row (from the first and also from china address). Jb file is copyied to root, the same place where I am copying the update.bin, but the latter keeps being deleted as soon as I unmount. I didn't have the opportunity to go to settings and choose Update my kindle. What am I missing?

I am in doubt if I should fatory reset the kindle before trying to jailbreak. I hadn't because it is not written in this tutorial, but in the link it is written: Factory reset before continuing. Could this possibly be preventing me from jailbreaking? Should I factory reset it? My serial starts with 9061 2201 .. My firmware is 5.6.5 (273030038). Thanks!

Double posting is a no-no at this forum.

You can't un-do a factory reset.

So -
Try first without (two or three times in a row) doing the factory reset.

If you do get this device jailbroken, never, ever, do a factory reset after jailbreaking.

Factory reset Kindle before continuing!

I will try some more times, I really need the jailbreak to use collections from calibre.

That step is **before** installing the jailbreak.

Since the jailbreak isn't on the system at that point, it can't be damaged.

It is **after** the jailbreak is installed that 'Reset' should be avoided.

Please use the directions in the second post of this thread (no 'reset' mentioned).

This file name is one used by the OTA update process, the update_*whatever*.bin is renamed to this name to be processed.

Create a folder by this name - all uppercase, with the ~ and the uppercase extension.
Enter the folder and create a file by the name:
.keepme
Yes, the first character is a period.

Uncertain if any versions of the firmware can detect and circumvent this one.

Hello, I'm trying to do what is described above in a non-jailbroken Kindle Paperwhite 2 with 5.6.5 firmware.
What I did so far was to create a folder named UPDATE~.BIN at "Kindle ( I: )". But when I go to that folder and try to create a file named .keepme, I can't do it, I don't know how to do it.

I went to Microsoft site to discover how do we create a file in Windows 10, they say:

To create a new file on the desktop or in an open folder, right-click a blank area, point to New, and then click the program name for the kind of file you want to create. After the icon appears, double-click it to open the file and begin working.

So I did it. I tried to created a .doc file and a bitmap file. In both cases, when I renamed it to ".keepme", windows says "Type the name of the file". So, I cannot create the file with this name.
Anyone here knows how to do it?

It can be done, I can see the directories and files myself.
So the problem isn't with the Kindle or with FAT-32.

It is some knowledge specific to Win10 -
Anybody?

Btw, I did not know what exactly did you mean by "In the top level of user storage". Looking at my video, would you say I'm creating the folder in the right place?

If you want to create a file starting with a . in windows, what you do is open notepad and create the file and save it as ".keepme" . Note you do have to put the quotes around it.
