Well, a quick update.
I used the SD image to flash an 8GB SD card I had laying around and put it into the kobo. It started and loaded nickel, but without touch capabilities. So I did the power/light factory reset, which worked this time, but still without touch. I opened the device again and made sure the two? connections for the screen where properly set, but still no touch. Any ideas? Would reflashing the original SD help? Thanks for the help. |

Maybe we should have a collective thread for non-responsive touchscreen problems, they seem to pop up more and more often lately? I too have bought an used Glo with unresponsive touchscreen, it's unfortunately hard to tell why that happens and whether it can be fixed. Haven't had the chance to find a replacement board to play with.
This is just guesswork: Quote:
I don't know enough about electronics so I'm not sure how to narrow such issues down. I only know that (in my case) on the software end there simply is not the slightest reaction from the touchscreen, so it's an issue of hardware/kernel rather than just a bug in nickel or whatever. |

Another quick update,
I tried putting back the original SD card without reflashing and the kobo STARTED into KSM. Sadly no touch. It then alone moved to nickel but still no touch. After some restarts I tried a factory reset and this time it worked as well but I can't respond to the pick your language screen because there is no touch. Maybe the SD card was only lose in the first place, or the flashed SD with davidfor's image fixed something? I don't know, but I still have a dead kobo. |

If the screen is well connected and all the ribbon cables are connected, I would look for anything blocking some part of the IR path. On the inside of the AuraHD's bezel there is a shiny black plastic, with scalloped outside edges, that is IR transparent and guides the IR beams. The IR emitters shine into the scallops and are corner reflected thru the plastic to cross the space just above the screen and thru the black plastic on the other side to the IR receivers mounted on the opposite edge of the PCB from the emitters. It takes very little interference with that path to totally knock out the whole touch function. Just having the bezel with the IR plastic misaligned can do it, but most times it would be some object on the plastic or between the plastic and the IR emitters or receivers.

Not sure where I posted this before, may be inaccurate anyhow
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/att...6&d=1434748263 Any dirt/obstruction/misalignment in the way and touch is dead. Of course if one of the emitter/sensors is dead there is nothing you can do anyhow... With strong IR emitters (like the Wii sensor bar) you can verify the functionality with a digital camera but that's not possible for IR touchscreens... (or at least, I have not managed to). So my careless prying on the plastic must have ruined it, because I've been able to get a couple of presses out of it after some brushing and cleaning and doing and undoing, but it feels a bit too inconsistent to be practical in an everyday use.
I probably should have payed more attention. I'll let you know how it goes after the setup. |

Well, it works!
I have to press the bezel in for the IR to work, but it works. I'm completely amazed by the whole repairing process, from SD card flashing to sensor aligning, and I thank everybody that helped. I have already arranged to get a mint second hand Aura HD, so if I don't manage to make the IR work consistently with the help of some tape or glue I promise to send it to whoever wants it here in Europe for testing. I'll start a thread when/if that happens. I wish I could change the thread title, so KSM wouldn't be associated with whatever the problem was in the first place, but it doesn't look possible. It used to work that you could edit the first post using the advanced edit and change the title for that post and the thread title would change as well. Don't know if that still works. A moderator could make the change, but I don't think there are any assigned to the Kobo forums. Of course a full fledged Greenie Moderator could do it.
