Say rather, that an application can explicitly include code to recognize a .lnk shortcut file, determine the .lnk's destination, and do something with that destination.

It is by no means automatically recognized (so the developers of DropBox, Google, et al. are not evilly blocking it, they just haven't put in the work to special-case those files).
This is a design choice by Microsoft.

...

As I said, on Linux and Mac OSX (both based on unix), there are symlinks instead of shortcuts.
A symlink exists at the filesystem level, a shortcut exists at the OS level.

A symlink is automatically recognized as the destination file by any application code that accesses "files".
A shortcut is a data file which contains a reference to the location of the file it points to, and applications that access "files", see a file with random, useless data.

Windows Explorer has special code which recognizes shortcuts and opens the destination.

...

That being said, Windows has moved on from the XP era, and there are utilities out there that can create links which resemble symlinks more than shortcuts. Those *should* work even for Dropbox.

e.g. see the "mklink" command-line utility that comes preinstalled on Windows Vista and on.

That being said, I thought I heard from somewhere that Dropbox does support this, but it will only notice and sync updates when you resume Sync? Or maybe that was the newer Junction links (which have their own special way of being created)?
I can't keep this Windows stuff straight, sorry.
As I shortly found out, there is symlinks functionality in NTFS, it just isn't as if that feature is greatly advertised or made easily accessible.

Ah -- I do know Windows finally got "mklink", I just thought I might have heard something about Dropbox gaining support for shortcuts and wasn't sure if I was getting confused with symlinks/junctions.

The fact that Windows has Junctions (hardlinked directories are stupid) and shortcuts ("G-d-only-knows-I-am") are definite points against trying to remember how the heck Windows is supposed to work.

Yeah. I can't afford the $120 yr/1TB plan right now (especially since I don't need it), but 100GB for a buck or two per month might be nice. I have 22.5GB of free space on DB, but would like about double that amount. I have accounts with OneDrive, Google Drive, Box, Copy, SpiderOak and PogoPlug and some of those have a lot more space than my DropBox account, but I just find DropBox works best for me in general.

I just have whatever you get with Drop box when you sign up and I think they gave me a Gb or so for using the photo thing on my phone. Not enough for ebook back up so I have to pay someone else for that. Just enough for some docs here and there.

I like how dropbox works better though, but I am not paying $120 a year for something when I only need 20 GB or so. Even up to 50. Who the heck needs a what is it, gigabite? Terra bite? I don't even know how much it is. I just know its too expensive for my needs.

Don't know the name of it, but there is a tool that makes using all kind of links on windows easy to use, by giving an option in the context menu in the explorer.

I came across it again while trying to remember how Windows does it.

It isn't as if I would think you're wrong eschwartz. The support of link structures in Windows based os'es is lousy. I came to win 9x straight from os/2 and was heavily astonished and plainly disappointed about how many features I had no longer available.

Well I am bummed. I liked Copy because it was so easy to use shortcuts.

My Dropbox account is too small and already mostly used.

Apple offer 50GB for $1/month, which I think is a good price point.

I spent some time checking around and I am unable to find another service that allows shortcuts.

Not even via the web browser interface? That's a little surprising.
