I actually think the frontlight does a lot to alleviate eye strain. Especially in lower light situations.

Models with frontlight tend to be newer/better screens. Reading on e-ink requires more light than paper IMHO. Built in front light will be more even and convenient than a clip on (no batteries ever to replace either). So yes, spend slightly more and stick with a frontlit version.

And for those of us who want to patch, we can. So you can have it how you want. I do like all the different options we have.

I disagree that a Carta screen with a font that has enough weight to it needs more light than a pBook. A lot of pBooks o not have much (if any) better contrast.

I've found depending on the light in the room, you can set the light to 2% and be able to read no problem.

I keep seeing e-ink and Carta is there a big difference?

Carta is the newest eInk screen. It gives you better contrast. The Kobo Glo HD uses a 300DPI 6" Carta eInk screen with a very nice front light.

Of course. I was responding to (and quoted) this: "Incidentally, to get epubs to display exactly how you want on the Kobos, you will need to install a patch and edit some config files."

Telling this to a random person who has said nothing about their display preferences implies that the built-in epub display options are inadequate for everyone, and must always be patched for user satisfaction. This is not the case.

I have devices with both screens and when I put them side by side to compare the difference is fairly obvious. When I'm reading they're both excellent.

Since Carta is E Ink then I wouldn't see much difference either. Read about E Ink in our wiki. There is also pages for each of the various screens that they make or have made in the past. There are specs on the differences.

I wish there were more e-readers or at least places available to actually handle ereaders outside of Kindle/Nooks there aren't many available in the US. I thought about a tablet but honestly I want the longer battery plus not being bothered with email or notifications is nice especially at night or on vacation.
If you are getting eye strain from a Nook ST, either your lighting is poor or you should maybe see an eye doctor. There is just nothing in that unit that causes the least amount of eye strain.

I know you are young but do find an eye doctor that will prescribe bifocals.
I was fortunate in that I found one when I was 21 that prescribed bifocals. Be sure and tell any eye doctor that you are a reader.
Larger fonts help too. That is what I love about my ereaders.
Oh you said you are 45 minutes from Tyler. Which direction?
