I checked my settings and the username and password on the iliad seems fine--matches the one on my irex account. I seem to be connecting when I push the connect button too. Should I just keep connecting hoping it will work? Or is there something else I can check that you can think of?
I find myself wishing I could just type in the MAC address--but I guess that would be too easy. ![]() Thanks guys for all your knowledge and help. Sherry PS. Do I need the developer package to use the config files option? Thanks again. |

Just make sure you have IDS selected and not COMPUTER when it's trying to connect. Also, make sure you're doing a "long" press of the button and that it's actually starting the network stuff. If you do a "short" press it'll just go straight to the download history screen, but won't actually attempt a connection. You should see the transfer screen come up and after a few seconds it'll say something like "Nothing to transfer".

Chinese or English iLiad?
Sherry,
do you have an english version: language set = 002 or Chinese version: language set = 010 You can find this at the device manager -> iLiad Settings -> page 10 The Chinese iliads don't have a mobipocket reader installed, in stead they support the EBA and XEB for Chinese e-books. This would explain why the *.prc files are not recognized by your device. ![]() If so, perhaps iRex support can reflash your device to proper english version? |

As somebody else suggested to you, try to restore your iliad:

Wow, you may have just nailed the source of my problem. Everything else about my Iliad (from other things I've read) is like a European one--It's got the Irex logo by the connect button and so forth but somehow I do have that Chinese language set on page 10 of settings.
I never would have dreamed of that possibility. Is core access even a possibility with this device? I'm not sure what I have now. It seems to be regular device except for the Chinese language option. That was a shock. Is this something that can be fixed or should I try to sell it to someone who WANTS that option? Sorry for all the free association, just wow! Thanks for hitting on that possibility. Bummer, but it's really good to know what's going on so I can look at my options here. Thanks so much, all of you. Suggestions as always deeply appreciated. This forum is the only source of information I've found since Irex and Mobi were not very responsive. Sincerely, Sherry |

That might explain some of your other problems, too. The chinese iLiads connect to a different iDS server, so if you have one of them your MAC address will never show up on the MyiRex website.
I also believe that you cannot install the developer access package on a chinese iLiad, so you won't be able to flash it yourself. Where did you buy your iLiad from? |

I got it from a little bookstore in Ireland. Kind of a vacation indulgence. I guess I'll be more careful next time! It wasn't exactly on sale, either.

It seems odd that a store in Ireland would be selling a Chinese iLiad.

Yeah. I'm still not sure if it IS Chinese or just a regular one that somehow got the Chinese language thingee installed..?
(It connected to the IDS to upgrade to version 2.12 of the software. But it won't show the mac address to download the developer package.) I'm waiting to hear from the Irex folks about the possibility of fixing it somehow--maybe by mailing it in to them. It does one thing I wanted it for very well. I love how it reads PDF files. Guess I could keep it as a very pricey PDF reader and buy an Astak when they come out with their mobi-reading 5 inch device for the mobi books I have. One thing for sure--no more huge impulse buys on vacation for me! Sherry |

If you can't get MobiPocket Reader for your iLiad, another option is to strip any DRM using mobidedrm and then use FBReader to read your MOBI files. Even after stripping the encryption, FBReader won't work when the file uses "high compression". The work around for this is to use Calibre's mobi2oeb (which does work on DRM-free MOBIs with high compression), and then read the OEB ebook using FBReader on the iLiad. This approach does not allow dictionary lookup though.
I use FBReader version 0.8.4 on the iLiad for almost all my ebook reading. The newer version, 0.8.14, is better integrated into contentlister, if you don't mind the lack of icons and less access to FBReader's customization options. CORRECTION: The Chinese iLiad can't load 3rd party applications and so FBReader won't work. Last edited by wallcraft; 07-31-2008 at 10:47 AM. |

You could use mobidedrm and then convert it to a PDF. I use Book Designer to do reformating/conversions, but there are probably lots of applications out there that do the same thing.
