Remove from device and download from that nebulous cloud if I want to re-read.

And mark Read in Calibre.

I keep all my books except the really bad ones that I'll never reread. Organized by author that's only 12 pages on home. That's manageable. Better if you could have sub catagories but still manageable.

I don't see any slowdown while reading and I never use search so why not keep them? I never know what book I'll feel like reading next and I often reread so having them all on my device is convenient. I just page through the list of authors until I see one that appeals at the moment. Whispernet is useless for me. I haven't even turned it on in years. Calibre is nice but I don't want to have to run home and turn on my computer to see what books I have then connect the usb to move it to my kindle everytime I finish a book.

Downloading is easy enough if you know the title, but if you own a couple thousand ebooks how do you browse the books to decide which you want to download while not at home if they aren't on your reader? With an eink reader not a tablet.

If I know I will be away from home, I pick books before I leave.

Once read, I delete it from my ereader. There are less than 6 exceptions, short stories that I re-read every now and again. Otherwise, I can reload it from Calibre if I want to read it again.

I have all of my books on my pc and various machines at all times. I love to reread my favorites. Since there is plenty of space on all of my readers it doesn't hurt anything to keep them all.

I reread a lot.
everything is on my wife's laptop and also on a portable hard drive.

There are some books I keep on all of our ereaders.
Most books are also on one of my ereaders.
Superhero novels and cookbooks largely reside on my Kindle.
I like to read cozy mysteries on my old PRS-350.
My aging Aztak Pocket Pro is filled with pulp novels and old radio shows.
The Onyx Boox I86ml is filled with manga and illustrated nonfiction.

So basically I keep copies things I have read somewhat sorted by categories.
It doesn't bother me if people think my archiving system is odd.

For individual books, I mark how I liked them in Calibre, and then delete off the reader. If it gets a 3 or less, I delete it out of the cloud (i.e. Amazon) because I'm never going to reread it. I'm just not big on rereading.

If it is a series, I transfer it to a COMPLETED folder until I'm done with the series. On occasion, I go back to a previous book and it was a pain to go find it. Then I delete them all when done.

I have one folder marked 'favorites' for those books I enjoy re-reading, some quite often. Those books just stay in the folder, ready to be read.

It depends upon the device.

My Kobo mini has mainly books I've yet to read, though I do keep a few favorite series in their entirety on it.

My Sony has all of the books in my main Calibre library. Once read they no longer have the "New" icon, but I leave the read books on the device.

My Nexus has my entire main Calibre library, the undread books from my To Be Determined library (all new-to-me authors), as well as the unread books from my Vault library (which I made to put books I've already read and wanted to keep, but didn't feel I needed to keep on my Sony. Since its creation I've found it easier to keep the new-to-me books by the authors in the Vault library together, so though it started as a completety read library it now contains a mix of read/unread books by authors I basically don't consider favorites, but where I wanted to keep their books).

If I DNF a book or finish but didn't like a book, I delete it completely from my device(s) and Calibre. Unless it's a dud by one of my favorite authors, in which case I keep it because I want to have all of their books. My favorite author list has shrunk a lot over the years though, so there's not many books that fit this category.

I'm a keeper. I have a couple devices with SD cards, so I just leave it all on them. I will admit that I have a bunch of freebies that I wonder why I bothered to get them because I'll probably never read them. They never made it to my second reader, but they are still in my Calibre library. If I had a reader that only had a couple GB and no SD slot, I'd have to be a lot more selective since I have a lot more ebooks than that.

All my books are in my calibre database. I just keep the next hundred or so I'm thinking of reading on my ereader, and delete them from there when I've read them.

Anyone with more than a couple of dozen ebooks should use calibre.

Not everybody. A friend of mine, with more than a couple of hundred ebooks, handles quite well her collection with a spreadsheet. Don't talk her about calibre, she says it's too difficult for her and gives her nothing over her actual method. Another friend uses it only for conversion, her list is out, because of the same reason. Not every tool is for everybody.

And the comment "It's because they don't know it well" doesn't matter, as both of them know it all they are interested in.
