Wait... Don't do that yet.

There is now a new released firmware you can try first. You could try a sync and see if you get it or go to the thread (see link below) and download and manually update.

Do ensure you download the correct one for your device.

I did happen to see that and gave it a shot. Unfortunately 5761 seems to exhibit the same problems as 5613.

I was careful to double check that. It's definitely the file for Mark 3 hardware and is identical to the file Kobo Desktop pulls down.

The strange thing is that seemingly at random, maybe one in 5 boots, the device looks and acts normally. Almost like something gets cut off before finishing at startup.

The UI text formatting and positioning in nickel is all wrong, and the device seems to shut off during some operations like processing content. It is also displaying what I assume is the same overlapping that YarnerT is talking about.

Strangely, if I install Kobo Start Menu, koreader and pbchess, they all seem to work normally. I have installed numerous hacks and tweaks in the past, so my first thought was that I somehow corrupted or changed files on the internal SD that don't get wiped out by a factory reset. However it seems less likely since only one firmware version is affected.

I've uploaded some pictures of the the black unaffected N905 on the left, and the problem white N905B on the right: http://imgur.com/a/tHlyx

This device has nothing important on it and I won't be bothered much if it gets bricked, so I'd be grateful if anyone has any tips or ideas to try out.
This is exactly what I was describing. Identical. I haven't had a chance to factory reset yet as oyhers have suggested, but it didn't work for you so I'm now doubting it will work on mine. I'll see what happens.

Thanks for commenting. I hope you get some help too.

Glad to know I wasn't hijacking your thread with a different problem. I've posted it to the bug thread and will send a note to Kobo. Am I right in assuming you have the N905B model as well? If not I'll change the report.

I have exactly the same overlapping problem on my Touch N905B. I tried factory reset and then manually installed firmware 3.18.0. There's no overlapping but it's very unstable, page-turns often freeze requiring paperclip reset. So I went back to the latest version, and can at least read the books on my home screen without it freezing on page turns. Hoping for a new version that fixes the overlapping problem.

Well I submitted details of the overlapping-screen problem to Kobo Customer Care in the UK. They take details in a web form, then give you a phone number to call. The agent said

* try a factory reset (which I've already done)

* they've had no other reports of this problem (which I doubt since other members of this forum have had the same problem)

* when they get freeze reports they can replace the device under warranty, but mine is too old (this is not relevant, my problem isn't freezing and is software-related)

* (after a bit of pressure from me) he will report the problem, with the full details I supplied, to the software team.

Not impressed.

I've seen this once on my H2O, I think it happened when interacting with the menu or collections and going to standby at the same time, never happened again afterwards though and my device is modded so *shruuug*
