Would the following work?

I have a Charger for my Zune MP3 player. You plug it in 230V/110V and it outputs 5V via a USB receptacle.

I plan to connect the USB cable from the reader into this power brick. The reader would think its connected to the PC.

I havent tried this yet. But This is how I charge my Bluetooth headset which is meant to be charged via USB, my creative zen MP3 player and my Zune. I am sure it would work for the PRS 505 as well.

any comments?

I am pretty sure it won't work. My wife has an iPod Touch and she has a wall wart USB power charger for it. I did try it with my 505 and it did not work. The best thing to get an a PSP AC adapter with the barrel plug. Not only will it actually work, but it will charge faster then it would via USB.

I thought I'd chime in to add another data point to this discussion. I tried my Motorola cell phone charger, which outputs 5.0 V == 550 mA via a mini USB connection. It did not charge the PRS-505. I left it connected for about 30 minutes, and the battery indicator went from 3 bars to 2 bars indicating that the battery was discharging, not recharging.

I can't believe people are still asking about and debating this.

USE A PSP CHARGER FOR THE 505, NOT A USB CHARGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I am the guinea pig then. So far 8 month and no problem. I'll risk it and tell the forum when my reader breaks. This way we have a data point and you all can tell me "I told you so".

Seriously, though: Listen to JSWolf and the others. If you buy a new charger, buy a PSP charger. It safe, it's reasonably priced and it's easily obtained world wide.

I am not too well versed in the theory of electronics, just a reasonably successful daily life tinkerer and soldering jockey. How would undervolting damagethe device? Because if it is true, I gave seriously wrong advice in my previous post. Too much voltage destroys things, but not enough should just leave it not working. The problematic Li-ion battery is supposed to have its own charging/discharging electronics that is supposed to prevent it from burning.

It won't work. Get a PSP AC adapter. One with the barrel type plug. DO NOT GET A USB TYPE CHARGER!

I think you can build yourself a filter that gives you exactly 5.2 volts.
You only two parts
1. an integrated circuit 7805
2. a 32Ohm resistor
and of course a soldering iron, Reader compatible jack, some wires and perhaps a cooling fin (a piece of aluminium, or a cooling fin from an old processor would do)
see http://peterflemming.ca/flemmweb_cur...inear/7805.pdf
for basic use of 780x IC.
You solder resistor to the "ground" pin, to adjust output voltage.
Let us compute what resistor you need:
Id current (from the "ground" pin) is, according to the datasheet, 6mA that is 0.006A.
You need to "burn" 0.2V in the resistor, so the regulator will give you 5.2 volts.
R=U/I so in our case R=0.2V/0.006A
http://www.google.com/search?q=0.2V%...=Google+Search
so you solder 32Ohm resistor to the "ground" pin and get exact 5.2Volts.

Please check your circuit under load with a voltmeter before connecting it to the Reader.

If you want to get really fancy, (and use circuit according to the manufacturer specification ;-) ) download
http://www.st.com/stonline/products/...re/ds/2143.pdf
and have a look at the Figure 19. - Circuit for increasing output voltage.
You compute R1 and R2 resistors to get exactly 5.2 volts.
you will need:
1. 7805
2. two resistors
3. two capacitors

If you show the picture in any shop that sells parts to hobby electronic builders (IF there are soch shops in your country) the staff should be able to help you to select parts. In my (relatively small) town there are several shops where you can buy such parts and get a good advice from the staff.

Finally you connect any DC power source that gives more than 7V and you are done.

In all seriousness, if you are in Japan and can't find a Sony PSP charger, you aren't looking very hard.

hey everyone...i dont want to make everyone angry or something. I will look out for a PSP charger. I just got my reader today. But out of curiosity, I connected it to my USB charger and the reader came to life saying that it is connected to the PC. Has anyone seen this happen? I dont know if this would charge the battery as I quickly disconnected the reader.

@JSWolf

Did you get the same behavior when you plugged the reader into the ipod charger?

When I tried the iPod USB charger, the red LED did not light up.

Looks like you've got a lucky charger then! If the red light lights up, then it should be charging. What is the model/maker?

For those in the UK waiting on their new readers; Amazon UK are selling PSP chargers for £5+ including delivery. Sony UK are selling virtually the same thing for £24, while Sony USA are selling at $24.
