I don't know if this will be helpful or not, but I had problems with ADE 4.5 when trying to import or open ebooks made with Sigil 0.9.0 and 0.9.1 and the ePub3-itizer plugin. But the latest version of the plugin, 0.3.4, creates ebooks that ADE 4.5 will read.
Epubs made from every version of the plugin worked fine in all other reading programs I tried, including ADE 3.0. So I assumed ADE 4.5 was the problem. |

Probably the media-types of fonts. Did your problem epub contain fonts?

ADE's inability to open your epub may be a DOCTYPE problem. (I reported something similar to Kevin early on, and changes were made to 9.2 which fixed almost all of the doctype problems.)
It's fairly easy to test my hypothesis: Take a single html file that won't open in ADE 4.5 then save only the lines between the <body> and </body> tags, either in Sigil or your text editor. Import this file in Sigil and then run mend code (under reformat HTML Files). Save the result and try to open it in ADE 4.5 Last edited by pete6055; 12-24-2015 at 04:54 PM. |

Unfortunately this isn't a matter of which ADE version I have, but what version the clients who need to approve my work have. "Not able to open in the current version of ADE" will be seen as a show-stopper.

What makes you think this is a Sigil problem?

It very likely isn't, entirely. But these epub files pass FlightCrew and EpubCheck in Sigil. They are rejected by ADE then, after further editing, in Sigil, they are accepted. Work on them again, in Sigil, ADE may again refuse them. I am struggling to discover just WHAT it changing between the accepted and non-accepted versions. But nothing but Sigil can be making that change.
Sigil may not be the original problem. But it certainly seems to have potential to be the solution. |

If you can privately post a working epub and a version of it ADE rejects, I would be happy to recursively diff the xhtml and xml documents and list any differences. In the old days even attribute order changes impacted older readers.

I would sure love to get an answer on whether or not any of these troublesome epubs show two mimetype files whenever listing the archive's contents. Because those are the ONLY epubs I've run into that validate (and are editable) by Sigil/calibre that ADE barfs on so far.

If you have a version working in ADE and after editing with Sigil no longer working you can use Calibre to compare the two versions and have a look if there are changes not done by yourself.

Then I suggest also installing ADE 2.0.1 as you'll need to make sure your ePub works with that version as a lot of older devices use an older version RMDSK. I don't know if you can install 2.0.1 on the same computer as 4.5. I was able to install 2.0 alongside 1.7.2.

Thank you sooo much! It was driving me absolutely insane trying to nail this down. It happens when saving after running EpubCheck. It doesn't happen if you don't save, and it doesn't seem to happen when saving after running the Flightcrew (or any other) plugin. Now that we know "what" we can figure out "why" and how to fix it! ![]() EDIT: ...and done. The Epubcheck plugin writes a new mimetype file to Sigil's scratch directory (bk._w.ebook_root). Suggested a fix in the plugin's thread. Different things (including saving with calibre's editor) will apparently eliminate the extra mimetype file. I think we should probably try to make Sigil be able to self-correct something like this as well (and possibly figuring out a way to make the contents of bk._w.ebook_root downright inviolable by plugins). I'd be very surprised if this wasn't the problem with your books @exaltedwombat. Last edited by DiapDealer; 12-26-2015 at 03:10 PM. |

I'd strongly recommend re-saving all ePubs that you edited and saved immediately after running the ePubCheck plugin. (Re-opening and re-saving ePubs with two mimetype files with Sigil 0.9.2 or Calibre Editor will automatically delete the extra mimetype.) I'm really sorry for any inconvenience that this bug has caused you. ![]() |
