I wasn't upset, just mentioning for those who might be concerned about what was left behind when they sell or give away their device.

'Secure Erase' would mean a lot of writing to the flash device, generally not a good idea on an older device.
I imagine that some people have things on there other than books (like personal notes).

A marginally effective 'remove' can be done by:

truncate --size=0 filename ; rm -f filename

Note 1: the above written for gnu-utils options, the same or similar should be available from the Busybox installed on the Kindles.

**should** - at least on the series 5.x devices, since Amazon has recently started using it (or the equivalent code) themselves.

Note 2: the above pair of commands removes some of the information left behind on FAT-32 that common un-delete programs depend on.

For the record, it wasn't the books. It was music files. It was either music I could not understand or just plain stand. On the K3.
And I didn't factory reset since I didn't know about that at the time but hooked it up to my laptop and cleaned it out that way.
Or I think it was the K3, I don't think it was the K5.

Amazon 'fixed' that problem on the newer than K5 devices -
They took away the Audio hardware.

Stupid question, but how do I enter this passcode?

Under "Parental Controls", it says that this Kindle is a managed device. Parental Controls are blocked.

You enter it into the password popup from the screensaver.
Assumes you have a password set, which is not a prerequisite for Parental Controls.

So I guess you just have to set a password, then ignore it and use the reset password. Very logical and intuitive!

Kubrick would be shorter than the amount of time it has taken to discuss this.

But a reset would be even shorter, if it was just done. Like, it wouldn't take 2 hours to just sit there while it flashes the firmware.

Since he or she said they got it from someone they know, my personal idea would be take it back to that person and have them deregister it.

Well they can't use it as is.
Option 4:
Since it was a gift, they could always give it to someone else and buy a new one.

Are we sure that this device is actually using Parental Controls? The phrase "Managed Device" makes me think that it is part of an organization's stock of Kindles using Whispercast--I know that some schools use this, and some businesses, too.

If that is the case, then factory reset is also probably blocked. Where, exactly, did this Kindle come from, again?

I've tried resetting the device using the on-off button, because the on screen button is greyed out, too. That didn't help.

As shalym said, I also guess that it is such managed device for schools. The NPO I got it from is a library and language school for adults.
