I won't be able to start reading, as my tastes will be guaranteed to be different from Kobo Inc.
I will have to (gasp) download my own books that I bought because I wanted to read them.

Alternatively, I could pick and choose from gutenberg.org or the MR library.

I agree those should have a (1) demo book in them.

generally speaking the units on display in a store are tied to an account which doesn't actually get charged for the ebooks. The account resets at set intervals, generally a day. At least that's been the case in the Best Buys I've visited checking out ereaders in the US. Seems little reason to do any preloading for those accounts either since folks can just download whatever they want to the device.
