Note that the screensaver hack only has a minimal impact on the boot process [unless you reboot your device while plugged to a power source/a computer], and is completely orthogonal to the wireless status, so... Gremlins?

Screen saver hack is completely uninstalled at this point. Guess I just live with WiFi shut off when the Kindle boots as I don't think there's a good way to diagnose this further.

As NiLuJe pointed out, these problems are probably just happening in coincidence with installing/uninstalling the screen saver.

Other than that, I haven't any additional, specific suggestions for this problem.

It is something local and/or something specific to your device.
If you notice anything else about the device's behavior or the operating environment it is used in, let us know, it may be the key bit of information.

With well over 1/4 million installs, and this being the only time we have heard of this is my reasoning behind a 'local problem'.

Understood and I tend to agree with your logic. Especially as I have a history of breaking software and devices; apparently I have unique usage patterns.

If you have any suggestions of something else I can log or examine, I'd be happy to go exploring. I am quite comfortable at Unix-ish command lines.

This issue is clearly something related to networking.

This PW2 was rooted right after I purchased it, I accidentally did a factory reset so needed to go through the whole process again. I suppose I could repeat that process but this does not seem to warrant that. Originally, this device was registered, after (my erroneous) reset, I just faked the registration.

One oddity now is that there is no "swipe to clear screen saver screen" like I remember from before. With the Kindle off there is a screen saver image. As soon as I power it on, it shows the book I am reading. This may be an artifact of me installing and removing the screen saver hack but I figured I would mention it.

Only a Kindle with special offers needs a swipe to remove the screensaver. An ad-free Kindle behaves as you describe.

Ah, so - the missing information.

You have a special offers device (S.O.) -
The screen saver hack is not supposed to work on S.O. devices, at least it isn't intended to.

The factory reset cleared (part of) the S.O. settings on the device but did nothing to its S.O. status in the Amazon database.

You have a 'fake registration' which is interfering with your device reaching Amazon and getting the S.O. settings in-sync with their data base.

Do the following in order:
  1. Remove the 'fake registration' changes.
  2. Remove our screen saver hack.
  3. Allow your machine to get on the Internet and sync its internal settings with the Amazon database.
  4. Register the device.

If you want to use our screen saver hack:
  1. Go to your Amazon account 'manage devices' page.
  2. Select the "Remove Special Offers" choice (whatever it is called now).
Note: The above may or may not require you paying the no-S.O. fee.
It may also require you to contact Amazon service to get its status changed.
  3. Let your device onto the network so it can connect with Amazon and sync its local settings with their database.
  4. Observe that the S.O. ads are gone.
  5. Now, and only now, install our screen saver hack.

BIG NOTE:
The screen saver hack is not intended to work on Special Offers devices as a matter of site policy and design. I.E: We (this site) does not interfere with Amazon's revenue flow as a matter of policy.

See:

And the notice in the Screensaver/Install section of the screensaver top post:

Do note that the "Swipe to Unlock" behavior is a particularity of the Special Offers screensavers that this hack will not replicate (this is in particular good to know if you happen to own a magnetic cover, since those severely limit the effective amount of time you'll actually see a screensaver).
