Memory Stick vs SD Cards on the Sony PRS 505

Reader supports a Memory Stick Duo™ of up to 16 GB, that’s roughly around 13 000 typical books. It also supports SD memory cards . It is important to note that Reader does not accept the “full sized” type of memory sticks or adapters. [comment: I didn't even know 16 GB Memory Sticks exist. Who on earth would want to carry 16 GB worth of e-books around??? ]
I started using SD cards with my Sony PRS 505. With only 200 books on it, I had to recharge the reader every 3-5 days. On advice from this forum I got a Sony brand memory stick and copied all of my books to it. The copy from PC to eBook reader was faster than it had been copying to SD cards, page turns on the Sony turned faster, and now I can go weeks between battery charges.

I used a newer version of the memory stick. It's designated as "Sony MSMT1G 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo (Mark2)," and it's rated faster than the first release. The advice I found on MR was that the old ones work much better with the PRS 505 than SD cards too, so either way it seems better to choose memory sticks.

Now THIS would be good news for all of us pre-existing 505 owners. I want epub support. I want, as someone put it so eloquently in another thread, evidence of Sony's commitment to the Reader by following up on its promises to buyers.

If this means a slew of more British authors with books for the Reader users in the UK, I hope we'll be able to get those books in the USA too. As a Brit in the US, there's lots of British authors I'd like to get onto my 505.

I will still be buying books from the US even though I am in the UK as a $14.99 for a new book means it costs me about £8. but in the uk it will cost me £14.99 or nearly $30!

Preorders are open now. I've just ordered mine to replace my Iliad.

To think I nearly bought a 505 while on holiday in Canada 2 weeks ago. I was wandering around a Sony store and saw one in a cabinet. I'm pleased I didn't now

Ha!
Sony reader chokes on MUCH less than 16GB of books. It will choke on less than a thousand books. It maintains a database and it needs to update it when you insert memory card with books. You insert memory card with several thousand rtf books and the reader would need several HOURS to go through the card if it did not choke somewhere around book 900.

The only way to use up the 16GB is to load the reader up with some really huge manga books and some enormously large mp3 files (1 mp3 per entire original CD with audiobook)

Can you imagine browsing through 1600 pages with the list of books?
Remember the Reader does not support any sensible book organization scheme, like those newfangled things called Folders that appeared on latest versions of the operating systems.

16GB
Sigh!

I don't know who's advice you got, but if you can fit a lot of eBook on the internal memory of the 505. Using a memory card drains the battery sooner then using the internal memory. Try using the internal memory and not an external memory card and you'll see you get more out of the battery per charge. I have about 80 eBooks on my 505 at the moment with plenty of memory left for more.

I have about 200 books on my Reader and have no problem. I am using the internal memory because of the battery issue, although it may be a catch-22 because i'm using more battery life because I need to reset and reapply the unicode patch every time i upload a new book to the internal memory, and re-format each book afterwards. Maybe a memory stick is in my future.

Hi!

First post so be gentle!

I've only had my Sony Reader 505 for 3 days. It was a birthday pressie from my boyfriend. He imported it from the US to the UK. I only have free books so far but would at some point like to be able to simply (as I can't get my head round all the techie computer stuff) buy newer books. I was disappointed that I can't do this from the Sony site so I was thrilled to see they're going to be released here.

My question is - without scary jargon (!) - can someone tell me what it means for my US reader. Will I simply be able to start downloading if they open the site to the UK? Will I need to update it somehow or will it not be usable with UK ebooks website like Waterstones?

Advice please!!!

From what we gather, all you'll need to do is download or get from someone the Waterstone's software and register it with that and you'll be able to purchase eBooks in the UK. But obviously, this is just what some of us think is what will happen. We cannot be 100% sure until it does happen. But I personally don't see an issue in the long run.
