Fortunately the doctor office has a WiFi network they allow us to use. Certainly not safe for doing business/banking/buying, but if you want to check the latest weather, news, et cetera then it is okay.
Of course, you probably logged into your email. (If nothing else, through the automatic downloading of email.)

That's even more compromising than logging into a bank web site - if someone cracks that, they have the keys to your kingdom.

The reality is that there is no such thing as an OK unsecured network. Don't use them. Ever.

If you absolutely *must*, make sure that you disable email fetching/push and get a VPN account. (Note that automatic services will happen in the open until the VPN tunnel is established.)

I have used TunnelBear for VPN services while traveling in the US and UK. They offer 500MBs for free each month and more data on paid tiers. You can download their app to give it a try or go to their website to research it. They have links on their website to reviews from Wall Street Journal, Lifehacker, MacWorld, etc.

Tunnelbear is good. Also, if you tweet (doesnt matter if nobody except the bear people see it) about it (theres a link inside the app) and do that every month, you get an extra 1TB. Its not a lot but if all you wanted to do was check email... easy.

If you check your email, or it's automatically downloaded in the background, you might as well have unless you have 2-factor enabled on all your accounts.

I wouldn't use a VPN service that is based in the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, or Australia.
I would suggest you look for a VPN service that has a policy of 'No Logging'.
I would also suggest you look for a VPN service that does not require any info besides email to setup.

Just to protect yourself from mitm attacks at hotspots... Is that really necessary?

I suspect that he is talking more from a privacy point of view than from a security point of view.

So, to be clear, one of the huge flaws in iOS security is that you can't stop all internet access when the VPN is not connected. This means that if you have anything set to automatically update in the background, it will do so in the clear until the VPN is established.

Unless it's an emergency, don't connect to unencrypted wifi. Period.

Cloak can be set to autosecure untrusted networks...which sometimes makes it difficult for networks where you have to log in first. No apps or updates are connecting in the background on untrusted networks unless Cloak has secured the connection.

The VPN I use (and most of the others) have a kill switch which, when active, means that if connection is lost, it will simply stop working, so no updates would occur. That said... I don't do updates when out and about and on public wifi (which is pretty pathetic in Australia so I don't actually use it much at all). I have a mobile wifi router, a ZTE something, which is my preferred option.

Cloak... $159USD for a year? *FAINT*. I don't think I have ever seen a VPN as expensive as that
