Thanks Ducks & Harry. Tried both options & Calibre is a bit faster opening now.
Do you think I did the right thing moving some of my books to a backup folder also, to make it quicker to load?
Do you do that?
The reason I asked is that I have found I have bought a couple of books the same twice as forgotten what I have already.

The number of books in your doesn't seem to appreciably increase the time it takes for Calibre to start up, in my experience. I have 8000 or so books in my library, and it starts in a few seconds on a not terribly fast 6-year-old laptop.

Fortunately I buy most of my books from Amazon, and they warn you if you try to buy the same book twice. That's saved me from buying duplicate books on several occasions .

@book64 - I have a several physical libraries ranging from a 400 to almost 70,000 books, my start time is about 6 or 12 secs* no matter which library (or virtual library) is opened at the start.

Composite custom columns (columns created from other columns) can slow things down; the extent depends on what is in the template code used to create them. Starting with an empty library would give indication if that's a cause.

It could be an over aggressive AV. Try disabling it, if that has any effect, try giving calibre dedicated temporary and configuration directories via the relevant calibre environment variables and exclude those folders from your AV.

* Variation is due to the data drive going to sleep when idle - my choice.

@book64 - assuming English is not your native language; if you tell us your native language maybe someone can translate.

I can't put it any plainer or less ambiguously in English. If you tell me specifically what you don't understand then I can elucidate, post some screen shots etc.
