elenium - there are character changes. the boy there is a young silk with other talents, rather than another garion. the goddess and sephrenia are a combination of aunt pol and the gods and other charactesr from the belgariad. sparhawk is a combination of garion and someone older and much more experienced. i don't love the series, but there are some unique characters and relationships.

and i agree 100% with bbusybookworm. althalus is the tightest of the books. it also seems that after refining the characters for 2 series and around 16 books, they have perfected them. i like althalus, who is a silk/belgarath combination, and i felt it worked very well. the second half of the book does again display the eddings' rather overblown 60's sitcom view of relationships between men and women, but otherwise the book has lots of life, some interesting stuff that surely didn't come up in their other books, and i enjoy it.

their current series - ick! argh! phew! i read the first book, and it was hard going. after that, i decided to move on.
