Wordperfect is a really great program (IMO) because it lets the user get into the fomatting codes very easily when necessary. I also use a program called "Hotdocs" which makes it easy for me to create forms for merging ... like if all of my client notes had to be in a particular form, style, or whatever.

And ... WP will save to the doc format.

Not a cheap program .... but quite the time saver.

A very interesting word, that ....

as you must be aware, young lass ....

"dead pledge" ... how often, very true; may seem like a millstone around one's neck...

(Though what people now-adays would think, when they complain of 5,6,7% interest rates, when I can remember (just) when we were paying almost 20% for a while ...)

Well, and MR, too, of course.
I'm not saying that one leads to the other, but, in my case, 18 months ago, I would have said the same thing. I'm not short of "hobbies" (writing, photography, bushwalking (the Noosa Heads National Park starts 100m up the road at the top of the hill), beaching) - it's just a bit like getting a whole table filled with chocolate and pastries and icecream every day, and being told to "go for it". Where does one start, knowing that one should have worked through the health main course before starting dessert.

That is, I hear what you (and others) are saying...but it might not be quite as easy to get out of a lifelong habit of obligation and working as you might expect, especially when the options explode out in front of you.

Seriously (and I'm not complaining), I'm about to start scheduling my leisure.

Geoff, lend us a hand here, will you?

Cheers,
Marc

You could go to the Texas MR get-together. That should take you some time just getting there & back.

Well, you could try doing a bit of voluntary work. A morning or two each week at the charity shop/advice centre/homeless shelter would add structure and a modest sense of obligation, if that's necessary.

Surf Lifesaving is what I'm considering. I'm not in lifesaving form myself at the moment, but I know that the clubs have backroom admin' stuff that maybe I could help out with (computer help, newsletters, accounts, maybe photography?). If they're using lifesavers for it, it might put one of them back on the beach rather than paying Club bills.

Cheers,
Marc

I expect that they would really appreciate that, Marc. My experience of charities is that they always need help in the office and with the less obviously glamorous tasks.

Agreed on the value of "backroom" tasks. Always in demand!

I have two or three specific things I'd like to be devoting more of my energies to right now. One is a manga title I'm working on. Another is my doctorate. A third is a card game I'm developing. I'd say those are the top three efforts I'd be putting my energies into if I didn't have a day job. So I suppose I've already scheduled my leisure.

The only reason the manga got listed before the doctorate, btw, is that it's summer, so that's what I'm working on currently. The card game is actually ready to go, but too expensive to print (especially after one printer failed to deliver and still owes me money), so I'm working with my brother and his slave labor--er-- students to develop an online card game server that will not only make my game available, but will be able to host original games developed by others. It's astoundingly expensive to get card games printed at anything like professional quality.
