Remember how awful first generations of Nook and Kindle front light were? You might have a point but there is a chance I get good light distribution... and I'd like to take that chance. After all, carrying a clip on light refutes the whole point of me getting Mini.

Yeah, sounds kinda like the old Sony 700 sidelight in a way.

I would buy Kobo mini with front light. I don't think your kulge front light will be good enough. Good luck and surprise me with great result. I use 8.57 centimeters long LED flaslight powered by 1 AAA battery to light my mini in dark with thumb and finger reducing already dim light.

Sure me too.
To be honest, I agree with all of you, it won't be fancy and as it'd be a personal project not with accurate tools and facilities, the result might be even worse than a clip-on light!

Can you post a picture of it? How long does it last for you? Where to buy? Any link?

I personally prefer a warmer white. However, the research, unless there is something new I haven't seen yet, was done with people reading on iPads on full brightness (!!) in a dimly lit room for two hours, causing a small delay in sleep onset (around eleven minutes, from memory). A lot of ignorant journalists turned that into "Your Kindle is bad for you".

Place a frontlit ereader on a sensible setting next to a ten inch tablet on full brightness, and you can see that the dose of blue light is much, much less with the ereader.

People flying hang gliders and sailplanes use Kobo Mini and other e-readers as flight computer because can read display in sunlight. I have seen link for Kobo Mini modification for 3D printed spacer to make Kobo Mini thicker to contain much larger battery to power GPS module.

Yes, I've seen 'em. It's a lovely device.
Next thing is to have Android on it. (Nook's or Shine's port of it - New Nook Glowlight Plus has Kitkat v4.4)

This is indeed very neat.
There are 2 points though:
1. Because of the glass/plastic layer, it will deteriorate the eInk quality of reading.
2. More importantly, I believe because of all the IR sensors and how they sit behind eInk, and do sensing, I guess it's not possible with this approach. What do you (and your friend) think?

But thanks, I never looked around what people have done with DIY frontlight designs and projects.

This $4.00 LED light is what I use when I really need to illuminate my Kobo Mini screen.
http://www.rayovac.com/Lights/Genera...-Keychain.aspx
I hold Kobo Mini with 3 fingers in relaxed curl under the reader and 1 finger on top of screen bezel at top corner. Bottom corner of reader is under side of my cupped hand. Flash light is held below thumb knuckle between thumb and palm close to flashlight lens with light shining on cupped palm of hand so it reflects even light onto screen. I can tap screen with thumb of hand holding reader to turn page or with other other hand.. This flashlight is something I always carry anyway. The special reader lights I have are too cumbersome to carry in my packet with my handy 5 inch reader. I often use this at theater waiting to watch a movie. At home might use a small desk light or the flashlight.

But, I might go for 5 red LEDs. ?
Or should I stay with white LEDs?
Bluish white is supposed to keep your mind active, that's why it is usually used in offices, while yellowish white is supposed to calm down your mind.

Select white. The tone is up to your preference. I find yellowish more pleasant than bluish, but it a matter of personal taste and how sensitive are you to blue light.

Red won't be good choice.

On the other hand, and taking into account the light diffusion layer, I don't think how difficult would be to take a front-lit reader with broken substrate (these should be cheap as some brands do not offer screen spares), and take out the diffusion layer and the leds to transplant into the Mini.

I had a handheld GPS with black-white LCD and red light once, it worked well for its purpose but I would probably not enjoy reading black-on-red.

I think the available for cheap clip-on-lights are still the best solution to get light on non-lighted readers.

My Mini is my fav. ereader, but alas, the battery is losing charge (I bought it when they first came out eons ago). I would buy a new one w/front light in a NY minute!

It seems very difficult to implement this project, and I figured touch will be at least partially lost, so...

But guys I found a "oldie-goodie":

I found broken Kobo Aura and bought 10 Euro, after package came, I will look in it, and if it's light works, I can share a few photo.
