Ever since 9.0 update I have been having issues with ringtones being loud enough and I only now about other notification because of the vibrate.

I would say that it's a mess in that the items in iTunes on the mac are accessed from different apps on the iPad/iPhone. iTunes on the mac controls music, audiobooks, movies, etc, while on the iPad, I access audiobooks view iBook, movies via the video app. What's worse is that there is no way to organize things on the Mac and have that organization propagate to the iPad.

That, and the user interface is a huge mess now, since they have just continued to pile features on top of it. If I've been to the store, it now takes me 3 clicks to views my playlists, using buttons in three different locations no less!

iTunes 11 was acceptable, but iTunes 12 is just a GUI designers nightmare. I have no idea what they were thinking when they designed that.

OK. Maybe it's just the fact that I'm only using it to store my music that means I don't see the issues you're experiencing. I don't have any video or audiobooks in it.

One question: Is there a way to hide the sidebar on the left that shows playlists? I've always had this hidden previously, but I don't see a way to hide it in the latest version of iTunes?

I guess I am like Harry I only use Itunes for my playlist and to back up my IPhone and as soon as I get my Ipad I will be backing it up. At lease in windows Itunes does not bother me much. I have to say I do not understand everything else that is installed with itunes. But I only open it once a month or so.

I know what he's talking about - If you're in the iTunes Store, the buttons on the left become shortcuts for things in the store. This annoys me too.

If you don't want to look at the sidebar, you use the "My Music" button at the top.

If I click on my music, the sidebar goes away. I only see it when I click on playlists.

I do agree that the UI has become increasingly more complex and less obvious. As an example, I listen to a lot of music where the order of songs matters quite a bit - classical music, musicals and concept albums. At one time, it was very straight forward how to do this. Now, it's quite hard, especially if you didn't buy the album on iTunes. As an example, I have the 1992 broadway album of Guys and Dolls. In order to play it as an album in the correct order, I had to go into the get info of each song and market it as an album with multiple artists. A real pain when you have thousands of albums and very non intuitive.

Does it list different artists for each track?

What I do personally in such a case is select the entire album, right click on one of the tracks, and set the "Artist" to some appropriate value. That sets the artist of all the tracks to the same value, so it lists (and plays) as a single album.

I don't think the behaviour you describe is new - it's the way that iTunes has always worked. Like you, I have thousands of CDs, but I've added them one at a time over many years, and ensured that the tags for each one is valid as I've added it.

And then you want to make sure your track and disc numbers are set properly.

If you've never had that problem before... iTunes did play an album backwards in last view the other day for me, so there could be a few bugs.

What I do personally with soundtrack albums is to set the artist to "Various" (and the genre to "Soundtrack"). That way they're easy to find, and all the tracks list and play correctly. I'm rarely interested in who performed a specific track, and if I do want to know I look at the CD. That works for me.

I didn't have the problem before the big refresh a while back. Album view was purely by album name, not album and artist, at least on the mac.
